OPTION 1
A common theme in Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman’s writings is the
idea that there are things that are much more important than laws,
government, and obedience to both. Choose at least two of these three
authors and use their work to show what they value. Given these
values, what role do your two chosen authors prescribe for government?

Warning: This option is a lot sillier than anything I’ve provided as a
prompt in the past, but I still think it’s a good question, so bear with me.
Imagine that Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman were serving together on
a committee charged with selecting the recipient of “The Greatest
American of the 21st Century (So Far)” award. Use their writings to:
a. thoroughly describe the criteria they might use to select the awardee.
b. choose a well-known American (someone currently alive or who was
alive into the 2000s) who you believes best meets these criteria. Being
specific, explain how your chosen awardee meets the criteria outlined in
the first section of the assignment.
