The Challenge: This is a statement affirming that each of us has a role in achieving the SDGs and making our world a better place! What can you, I, or we do?

The Assignment: This is a creative assignment in which students are empowered to create their own project activity that contributes a small part to achieving the SDGs. Students can work individually or as a group. You can select your own group members if you choose to work as a group.

Step 1: Learn about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the history, and what the overall purpose and hope is for global development and change.

Step 2: Research the goals and learn more about different ways individuals and groups can work to implement these goals into practical steps. Research and understand the targets and indicators.

Step 3: Brainstorm! Select a specific issue reflected in the SDG’s you want to raise awareness about such as addressing gender inequality; improving access to menstrual hygiene products for young girls; highlighting the need for clean water in Newark; equal access to the internet for everyone as a human right; etc.). You can focus on a specific location such as a city, state, country, or it can be more global without a specific geographic location.

Step 4: Think about your strengths and special talents! Do you sing; write poetry, plays, blogs, or music; make Tik Tok videos; make collages; paint or draw; play a musical instrument; do hip hop; play sportsLinks to an external site.; etc.)?

Step 5: Create something to share as a picture, video, presentation, poem, blog, or other useful tool or presentation that is useful to educate and raise awareness about something you are passionate about and how important it is for global development as represented in one or more of the SDGs.

Step 6: Share with the class as a “show and tell” in the discussion board

Climate action, Goal Thirteen’s call, For our planet, let’s give it our all. Life below water, Goal Fourteen shines, Oceans’ health, in every line.

Goal Fifteen, on land and in air, Nature’s beauty, for all to share. Peaceful societies, Goal Sixteen stands, Justice for all, in every land.

Lastly, Goal Seventeen, the Global Pact, Partnerships formed, there’s no turning back. To achieve these goals, hand in hand we stand, Together we’ll build a better world, so grand.

Let’s work as one, let our voices sing, For a world where hope and promise spring. The SDGs guide us, as we play our role, In making our world whole.
