•
LO 1: Evaluate thermal transmission through elements of construction and assess the
effectiveness of alternative forms of construction in terms of thermal performance.
•
LO 2: Evaluate the effects of moisture and ventilation on the indoor environment and
indoor air quality.
•
LO 6: Analyse the sound absorption and insulation characteristics of building materials
and evaluate the acoustic properties of complete elements of construction.
Assignment Objective
This assignment is focused to provide awareness on thermal transmission, thermal performance,
effects of moisture, ventilation and sound absorption. The major objective of the assignment is
to evaluate various characteristics of building materials. In addition to this, students shall
understand sound absorption, insulation and acoustic properties of elements of construction.

without fail.
Report Sections
(100 Marks)
Considering the scenario provided below, student shall prepare an individual report as per the
report sections mentioned below.
Student shall complete ONE online MOOC course as mentioned below. All students shall
complete MOOC courses and shall contribute their understanding in the coursework report with
appropriate references. Details of MOOC course is provided here below, and completion of
MOOC courses is mandatory for this Coursework assessment. Students may also come up with
any other online MOOC course (on approval from the instructor) relevant to the topic and may
complete the course as suggested.
Introduction to Indoor Air Quality (Approx. 8 hours to complete)
https://www.coursera.org/learn/intro-indoor-air-quality
Through appropriate case studies, student is required to study the basics thermal transmission,
thermal performance, effects of moisture and ventilation on the indoor environment of indoor
air quality in line with construction and built environment introduced in the literature and
references. Student is required to evaluate the effects of moisture and ventilation on the indoor
environment and indoor air quality. Concepts of Indoor Air Quality and Internal Environment
must be reviewed, discussed, via exploring academic and technical journals, MOOC courses,
technical reports, articles, conference proceedings, text books, codes and standards, case
studies, government and professional guidelines in the field of construction and Internal
Environment. Also you must discuss the significance of Indoor Air Quality, Thermal Transmission,
Ventilation, insulation and Sound absorption in the present indoor environment of buildings in
the current scenario including challenges, concerns and needs related to this topic in
international and local level.

being implemented in Oman.
•
investigate effects of moisture and ventilation on the indoor environment and indoor air
quality construction methods in Oman.
•
collect required information through official/authorised websites.
•
Student shall also perform scholarly study through text books and e-library resources to
analyse the sound absorption and insulation characteristics of building materials.
•
browse official websites in Oman and investigate on acoustic properties of complete
elements of construction being used in Oman.
•
complete ONE online MOOC mentioned below. Student shall submit evidence of
completion after successful completion of the course and student must submit evidence
on Moodle or in the report appropriately.
•
Student shall prepare an Individual report according to report sections mentioned
below.
