Description
Due Monday Nov 13, 11:59 PM. This essay question is a formal paper and an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about energy, climate, and the environment and tie it all together. I will be looking for more details and understanding of the course material as a whole than the previous assignments, so make sure you answer each question and clearly address each topic in the essay. It is a multi-part question. Of course your essay must be entirely your own work, but you may take it to the writing center for feedback as you might any other paper. I suggest you do so, since grammar and writing skill will be also be assessed on this one. You do not need to cite information gained from the lectures in this course, but you do need to cite any outside research you do (APA preferred). You are not expected to do outside research and you should be able to answer the questions from course materials, but you may do additional research if you feel it would contribute to your essay. Read the questions carefully and address all of the points in the prompt. I expect that will result in about3-4 pages, but it can be a little more or less as long as you cover everything in the questions. Please consider all you have learned in the course, and your essay should show understanding of the role of physical and natural sciences in relationship to public health problems. Important note: You must choose an alternative energy, clean and sustainable, which means you can not choose the status quo and go with any fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas. Double spaced,12 pt, any typical font, 3-4 pages, 10 points (10% of final grade).

By the end of the semester, can the students understand the role of the
physical and natural sciences in determinants of and relationship to
problems in the health of the public? [Goal 2; Learning Outcome 3]
Throughout this course, we have discussed the connection between the
environment and public health through the framework of sustainability:
We have also discussed how we produce energy and electricity in the United
States. South Carolina is heavily reliant on nuclear power with 60% of electricity
in 2017 generated in South Carolina originating from nuclear reactors
(www.eia.gov). Two new reactors at the VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant in
Jenkinsville were approved in 2008. However, construction of these new reactors
was abandoned in 2016.
In this assignment, I would like for you to consider this scenario from two
perspectives. Make sure your answer addresses each part of the topic:
First, discuss the economic, environmental, and social implications of the
unexpected stoppage of reactor construction beyond South Carolina. How does
this decision influence the energy stage for the world? What impact does this
have on air pollution, water pollution, and exposure to toxins at a global
scale?
Second, what are the resulting implications for people in South Carolina and our
local environment? An obvious implications of reduction in nuclear energy as a
source of electricity in South Carolina is the need to find a replacement. Several
options exist that we have discussed in class. Please choose one of these
alternative energy sources and discuss the economic, environmental, and
social implication of choosing this new source of energy as compared to nuclear
power. How would a transition to a different source of electricity in South
Carolina impact South Carolinians, the local environment, and the South
Carolina economy?
