MIAMI STORIES
When my mother and I arrived at the Miami Airport on July 31,
2013, I would say that was the happiest day of my life since I had always
dreamed of moving to the United States, I even remember my excitement that
same day when I woke up. It was summer therefore it was a hot day. When we
entered the airport I could feel the air conditioner’s coldness and I was
surprised to see how prepared everyone was compared to Cuba. I saw various
things I could not have dreamed of at the time, such as the police dogs, moving
walkways, little cars the officers used to move around the airport, and the
automated sinks and hot air hand dryers that made the bathrooms impressive
to me. Even though I thought I had already made it, little did I know I had a
long journey ahead of me.
I used to ask my mother, “ Ya vamos a salir?” all the time, and she
would always respond, “ Todavia Eblin, tienes que esperar”. At one point, I
even irritated her because I was impatient, and I believe she was anxious to
travel to a foreign country by herself, and at times I could feel her breathing
heavily. As an eight-year-old, all I could think about was what else might be
outside the airport, which made me want to hurry outside and explore. A
young, thin teenager, maybe seventeen or eighteen years old, helped us carry
our bags as my mom and I were not strong enough to do it ourselves, and he
helped us the entire way.
He and my mother talked while we waited for the longest line of my
life. She would say, “Dios mio, cuando saldremos de aqui?” a few times,
moaning in frustration. When my mother became anxious in circumstances
like these, our slender friend would always calm her down. Because he knew a
little bit of English, he occasionally translated what he understood so that we
could know what we were being told.
We were almost out of the airport and my mom needed to make a
call to ask my aunt where to go. It was difficult to get a stranger to lend us
their phone to make a single call since everyone kept ignoring us. However,
there was one man who was passing by and appeared to be an airport
employee because he had a single case and was dressed more formally than
everyone else. My mom was able to talk to my aunt and after walking a little
bit longer the three of us made it. My aunt and my grandfather were there
waiting for us and they both gave us a hug, and like that we said goodbye to
our thin friend who had reencountered with his mother and went our
separate ways.
We drove to my aunt’s condominium in my grandfather’s 2013
brown Nissan Rogue. When we went inside more family members were
waiting for us, they started saying things like “Bienvenidos al yuma“ and “Por
fin llegaron”. Inside everything was decorated with cookies, cupcakes,
balloons, and there was one in specific that became my favorite. It was a
Sponge Bob balloon that could sing happy birthday, since it would start
playing every time it was touched my cousin Dayana said “De tanto Happy
Birthday ya no me deja ni dormir”. I was given various presents that day like
toy cars, clothes and snacks, but my grandfather saved the best for last. It was
one day after my birthday when I arrived to Miami so as a birthday present he
got me an Android tablet and I couldn’t be happier because it was everything I
ever wanted. My cousin Dayana taught me how to download different games
and apps for free in the Tablet and that night I played a variety of games
before I went to sleep. I still live at the same condominium I lived in ten years
ago, but in a different apartment and I couldn’t be more blessed to be in this
city were I grew and can Interact with people from different parts of the world
including Cuba.
