Description
Hello currently I am taking two different classes of the same teacher. I cannot have the same answers for both assignments so the answers have to be written as though it was from two different people.
First assignment is as follows:
Lesson 1: Geography essentials and the scientific method
What is Geography? What makes the discipline unique? What do geographers do? Where do they work? Give a few examples.
Give an example for each of the 5 themes of geography with a sentence or two explaining the relationship or provide a photograph and a short caption.
What is STEAM and why is it important in the sciences?
Describe systems theory: What is the difference between a closed and open system? What does positive feedback do to a system? What does negative feedback do? What is a steady state equilibrium versus a dynamic equilibrium? (Think about what happens when a system has to change due to feedback. What happens to the equilibrium?) What does it mean for a system to reach a threshold or tipping point?
Define the 5 spheres on Earth. Which are you most interested in learning about and why?
What is citizen science? How has geography enabled data sharing?
Define and state the difference between a hypothesis, law, and theory in the sciences.
Explain the origins of Earth and our solar system.
If an idea or a theory cannot be disproven by some possible observation, experiment, or test, can such an idea be supported by science? Explain.
Read a Pale Blue Dot or listen on YouTube and provide reflection on the speech and your perspective of our world. What do you think being able to see the Earth from space for the first time at such a great distance meant for our society in the 1990s? Why do you think it is important to study physical geography and understand Earth systems? Do you think other “Earths” are rare in the universe? Do a internet search and see what the latest news is on habitable planets.
Second assignment is as follows;
Story Maps
Everyone has a story. And every map is a story. And everything happens in a place. What you have learned this week is:
Geography is a physical and a social science.
Art has a place in science, and especially in Geography.
Geography studies the relationship between the humans and Earth interactions
5 themes of geography can relate to both human and physical phenomena.
Visit ESRI Story Maps and choose a story map to review and evaluate. Think of this assignment similar to reviewing a book, movie, or show. Make sure to think about the questions below when writing your review although you do not need to answer all of the questions. Instead focus on giving a strong overview of your map and how it relates to what you have learned so far in Geography. Feel free to add personal comments about what the map means to you or how you think the design or flow contributes to the reader’s experience.
Your review can be a
short essay
A video submission (although I suggest preparing your points ahead of time, you are graded on clarity).
answering the questions directly
providing screenshots or pictures of your map which answer the prompts such as a how a region was defined.
Bullet points or lists of the pros and cons of map design
Provide the link to your story map.
Highlight the 5 themes of geography in the story map. Think about the following:
Are any themes missing?
Is there relative or absolute location or both in the map?
Did your map show or talk about a region? How was this region defined?
How is movement depicted in your map?
Explain in detail the human-environment interaction.
Does your story map have aspects of physical sciences, social sciences, or both? Why or why not?
What made you choose this map? Was it the topic or the artistic choices?
Did the map enhance your understanding of the topic? Was there something that could have been done better? Was the data presented clearly?
