Point Value
In both responses, major points are supported by the following: Reading and study materials;
good examples (pertinent, conceptual, or personal examples are acceptable); and thoughtful
analysis (considering assumptions, analyzing implications, comparing/contrasting concepts).
Discussion Topic
Purpose/Goal:
The goal of this discussion is to examine the complex factors of culture that may increase
the likelihood of oppression and inequitable access to resources. Increased understanding
and investigation of these concepts will lead to more culturally competent practice that
considers the various contextual factors of the individual, the community, and the
sociopolitical realm.
Parameters:
For this assignment, you must answer the Initial Thread Prompt(s) below in a new thread
within this discussion forum. Your initial thread must be 250-300 words and contain at
least one reference from the corresponding textbook chapters and supplemental articles.
Your writing may be informal but still professional and must adhere to the current APA
writing style.
You must also reply to two of your peers’ threads, considering the Reply Prompt(s) below.
Each reply must be 150-200 words in length.
Initial Thread Prompt:
Please create a visual that illustrates your understanding of intersectionality. Your visual
could be an image, a pictorial representation of a theoretical model, a table, a figure, and/or
any other modality that demonstrates your views. After you have selected a visual, please
discuss how this visual relates to your interpretation of intersectionality. Please include the
concepts of culture and oppression. How does the idea of intersectionality relate to your
Christian belief system?
Replies Prompt:
After you have posted your initial thread, reply to at least 2 of your peers’ posts. Replies
should be substantive and include at least 1 reference to this week’s learning material,
cited in current APA format. Discuss the similarities and differences in your discussions. Is
there a particular thread you agree or disagree with? If so, why? Is there a point that a
classmate could have expounded upon a bit more? If so, constructively provide feedback.
PEER A RESPONSE
By definition, intersectionality is a way to conceptualize a person or group of people based on
their social categories, identities, and sources of oppression (Hays & Erford, 2022).
Intersectionality is how the world views and treats you. With that comes advantages and
disadvantages from the world views, leading to the oppression of cruelty from other
individuals. Often, I wonder how individuals can be so cruel intentionally, and other times, I feel
bad for some because they know no other way than what they have been taught. Specifically,
this image shows five conceptualizations from physical and mental attributes that stand out to
me when understanding intersectionality.
As a Hispanic woman, I am often asked, Do you speak Spanish? Alternatively, “Can you help
translate?” Although in these moments, I want to help, I cannot physically but also cannot help
but see that there is a stereotype that is taking place based on my ethnicity and physical
appearance. I come from a family who spoke only English to us, although my parents are fluent
in Spanish and English. One can only assume that it is because of our culture that English is our
city’s most dominant language. I have learned not to take offense to what people do not know
but to educate them now. If we understand our values and consistently act on them, it is more
likely that our choices will reflect our highest ideals (Koppelman, 2019). Loving myself and
others has been my greatest superpower, and Christ himself has shown me that it is possible to
love just as he loves.

PEER B RESPONSE
Intersectionality suggests that people are often disadvantaged as a result of various
oppressive factors. Identifiers such as race, class, gender identity and sexual orientation are
sources of oppression. This theory suggests that systems such as racism, homophobia, and
ableism cannot exist as a separate entity.
As a black woman, I have experienced prejudice and microaggressions. This is especially true in
the workplace. One thing that often sticks out to me is when I wear my hair in its natural state. I
am often asked, “how did you do that to your hair?” or “is that your real hair?” In this instance,
you can not separate me being black from me being a woman. In her 2022 article, Sarah El
Garib, shares a quote by Audre Lorde that perfectly captures the essence of intersectionality.
“There is no such thing as a single issue struggle, because we do not live single issue lives.
As far as the Church is concerned, we are taught to love ourselves. Unfortunately, for many
Christians, love ourselves is often reserved for those that look like us and think like us. The
bible speaks against not liking people who are different than us. There are many instances in
the Bible where Jesus shows us how to interact with individuals who are different than we are.
“Nowhere does it say, love your neighbor as long as…”
