Course Requirement: Mid-term
proposal and final paper
• A written proposal (3 to 5 pages) for the final
paper or the project will be due by mid-term
(2024-3-5 at 23:59)
• In the proposal, students shall outline the
issue he/she will explore in the final
paper/project, discuss the significance of the
issue, and include a brief literature review and
a list of related sources/references.
Course Requirement: Mid-term proposal
and final paper
• The paper may take any number of forms,
depending on individual student’s interests.
• Suggestions include:
– (a) a research paper/essay on an aspect of new media
in East Asia;
– East Asia: Either China or Japan
– Other regions?
• It is fine to discuss new media in other countries like Korea.
But the paper/project must focus on new media in either
China or Japan.
• E.g., A comparison of social media use in Japan and Korea or A
Korean popular music community in Chinese social media
Course Requirement: Mid-term proposal

• (a) a research paper on an aspect of new media in
East Asia;
– An aspect of new media: Very broad. Any issues related
to new media.
– Social, cultural, political, economic, and other aspects of
new media use
• E.g., A comparison of social media use among youth in Japan
and China
• A popular music fun community in Chinese social media
• Internet control in China
• The distribution of amines on a Japanese social media
platform

depending on individual student’s interests.
• Suggestions include:
– (b) A literature review of new media in China or Japan
– Example:
– A review of current research on social media and social
activism in China
– A review of current research on mobile Internet use in
Japan

• (c) a project of the student’s choice, to be
discussed with the instructor for approval.
Suggested Structure of the Proposal
• Give the proposal a title: Title of the proposal
• Clarify the Topic or (research) question of the
paper
• Introduction of the topic
• Significance of the topic
• Literature review of the topic (summary of past
research based on articles or book chapters)
• Sources or references
Proposal: The brief literature review
• We just need a very brief literature review to explain why
your research topic is important and what has been done
by past research.
• You could also summarize the limitations of past research

• For the brief literature review, you could focus on one or
two questions the U of T article has listed such as the last
two questions.
• 1. In what ways does this book or article contribute to
our understanding of the problem under study, and in
what ways is it useful for practice? What are the strengths

thesis or question I am developing?
