Topic: What were the positive effects of prohibition
You will be asked to write a 1page outline in point form following
the guidelines provided in lectures. You may include short quotes from sources, but
make
sure your voice is also present. The outline should give a road map of how you will get
through your argument and not be simply a list of random points.
Outline template:
Your outline should be written in point form and should consider the following:
Argument/ Sections/ Focus/ Order
Remember the 15 steps we discussed earlier
Chances are, the more specific and clear your outline, the better your final grade on the
take home.
Keep the outline to one page and be in point form. Include quotes (the more specific
the
better). If you exceed one page by a couple of lines, then fine.
Make sure your voice is present and use quotes to help you prove. However, do not let
sources take over the paper; there should be a blend of you and the sources.
Outline template: your name and student number at top in Times New Roman 12 (do
not worry about proper format for now)
Thesis/topic or title should go next. Then:
Section one umbrella term (s):
Begin with a point in your own words to set up the foundation of the argument:
Xxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx etc in point form (set up the argument with your
words)
Maybe then include direct academic quote in the section: “xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxx etc”
(citation helpful, but not mandatory). The more specific the outline, the better
More of your points
Maybe another quote
Another one of your points to make connections between your ideas and quotes
Section two umbrella term (s)
Similar to section one with developing ideas (remember 15 steps for organization and
structure)
Section three umbrella term (s) and so on
You do not need a conclusion or a Woks Cited or Reference Page for your outline.
This example is obviously very general, but you get the idea.
Note: do not submit a prose outline or you will not be given a passing grade
Outlines and templates:
Here is a rudimentary template for academic writing:
An Introduction that includes:
A general opening statement and
Sections of S are a, b and c.
And a Thesis
Then Section: a
Followed by Section: b
And then Section: c (or more)
Followed by a proper Conclusion which reinforces and sums up
Your sections headings will be defined in the outlines you provide throughout the course
If you follow this simple template and work on clarifying section headings, your writing
will greatly improve and the production of your essays become a much easier process.
