Week 2 Discussion WRGT 112 (2)

Description

The Grammar Lab this week, which you may remember from WRTG 111 if you took that course, discusses the idea that it is the dominant culture that determines what standard English is and therefore the expected way people are to speak and write in order to be successful in school, work, and life. Standard American English (SAE), however, marginalizes other versions of English that operate with a different set of grammatical rules putting those who use a “non-standard” version at a disadvantage. Initial post (by 11:59 p.m. on Friday): For this discussion, view Jamila Lyiscott’s TedTalk 3 ways to speak English and in two to three paragraphs share your thoughts on the following: What do you think it means to be articulate? Is Standard American English necessary? Where do you agree or disagree with Lyiscott’s ideas?
