Description
Week 1 Discussion
As you prepare to transition from an academic student to a newly graduated nurse in clinical practice, consider the following:
What two provisions in the ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses may help you in this transition?
Expand on your chosen provisions and describe how adopting them into your clinical practice will help you to be successful.
In order to receive full credit, you will need to clearly respond to both parts of the question using subtitles or bullets AND cite at least one scholarly reference in your response. You are required to participate on at least three (3) days of the week to receive full participation points.
EXAMPLE:
• As I prepare to transition from an academic student to a newly graduated nurse in clinical practice the two provisions in the ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses that may help me in my transition are provision 4 and 5. Provision 4 states, “The nurse has authority, accountability and responsibility for nursing practice; makes decisions; and takes action consistent with the obligation to promote health and to provide optimal care” (ANA, 2015, pg. V). Provision 5 states, “The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth” (ANA, 2015, pg. V).
● Provision 4 is important because as a nurse you have the responsibility to provide the best possible care for your patients. Also while providing that care you are always accountable for the overall outcome of the patient. This is done by implementing the ethical principles such as beneficence, nonmaleficence, accountability, fidelity, autonomy, and veracity. These ethical principles will allow me to do right by my patients. Provision 5 is important because if you don’t take care of yourself first you are in no condition to take care of others. As a new nurse it is possible to become overwhelmed with stress due to the long shifts and new environment so taking time to adjust and reduce stress is important for everyone.

WEEK 2 DISCUSSION:
Nurses can be an integral part of designing public policy as political leaders. As a registered nurse, you have a professional commitment to improve health care. However, many nurses are not politically active and do not lobby for important aspects of their profession.
What are the reasons many nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts?
What actions can nurses take to encourage themselves and their peers to get involved politically and lobby for specific issues such as healthcare policy changes? Provide a detailed example.
In order to receive full credit, you will need to clearly respond to both parts of the question using subtitles or bullets AND cite at least one scholarly reference in your response. You are required to participate on at least three (3) days of the week to receive full participation points.
EXAMPLE:
● What are the reasons many nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts? ○ “Major factors acting as barriers to participation include inadequate political and policy development skills, lack of status of women that also shapers the image of nursing, lack of education and lack of supportive organizational structures” (Shariff, 2014, pg. 3).
● What actions can nurses take to encourage themselves and their peers to get involved politically and lobby for specific issues such as healthcare policy changes? Provide a detailed example. ○ Feeling and being supported is important when it comes to policy development. It includes “benefiting from role models, supportive mentorship and networks for support and sharing experiences” (Shariff, 2014, pg. 6). Being supported is also done through teamwork. “There are two important aspects for teamwork in policy influence: One of them is nursing coalitions in the framework of associations and organizations and the second one is interdisciplinary participation” (Arabi, et al., 2014, pg. 319). Some activities nurses can participate in include voting; campaigning; attending rallies; volunteering; contacting elected officials; working with others on local problems or issues; and being a member of nursing or non-nursing organizations that take stands on political issues (Alhassan, et al., 2019).

week 3 discussion:
The United States and other countries are experiencing nursing shortages. To help ease the shortage, many resources are spent on recruiting foreign nurses.
What are the reasons for these shortages? If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, would the need to recruit foreign nurses decrease? Why or why not?
Choose one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discuss how a community nurse can work toward achieving that goal.
In order to receive full credit, you will need to clearly respond to both parts of the question using subtitles or bullets AND cite at least one scholarly reference in your response. You are required to participate on at least three (3) days of the week to receive full participation points.

– What are the reasons for these shortages? If the United States and other industrial
nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, would the need to recruit
foreign nurses decrease? Why or why not?
– Choose one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discuss how a
community nurse can work toward achieving that goal
According to the World Health Statistics Study, there are approximately 29 million nurses
and midwives around the world, and roughly with 3.9 million of those working in the United
States (Haddad, 2020). They are an extremely vital part of the healthcare industry and also form
part of the largest portion of the healthcare profession. Even though nurses are a vital
component of the system, there is an unfortunate shortage of nurses. There are a few factors
that contribute to the shortage of nurses such as nurse burnout, aging work work, high tuition
fees, and regions (to name a few). Nurses burnout can be seen in new graduating nurses who
go into the profession and realize that the career is not what they thought it would be. Nurses
burnout can especially be seen during this pandemic as hospital units had to go through a shift
on a skeleton crew, or nurses experiencing high covid-19 related deaths. Aging workforce is
another factor that has led to nursing shortages because roughly 1 million nurses in the United
States are older than 50 years old. Meaning that in about 10-15 years one third of the entire
nursing workforce can be retiring (Haddad, 2020). High tuition rates is another reason for the
nursing shortage because the financial burden of receiving a higher education turns young
individuals away; they will seek less expensive degrees). Lastly, regions are causing a nursing
shortage in the United States. In regions such as California, Texas Florida there is a surplus of
nurses and healthcare facilities do not have difficulty obtaining a workforce. Yet, in other regions
of the country there are communities that are struggling to find the basic support for the
community.
The United Nations adopted a set of goals that called for universal ending of poverty,
and ensure the people of the world experienced peace and prosperity by 2030. They called
them the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which consist of 17 goals. From the
sustainable development goals, goal number 2 of zero hunger can be achieved by a community
nurse. A community nurse can achieve this sustainable goal of zero hunger by partnering with
the community to establish food banks. Members of the community and organizations can
donate to local food banks to provide food to the needy and with less resources.
