Over the last 30 years, the opportunity for free play has slowly been eliminated from early childhood programs, and almost never exists in kindergarten curriculums, as greater demands for academic performance and learning standards are placed on students and teachers. Recess and the arts are being replaced with intensive math and literacy instruction and chronic media exposure limits opportunities for imaginative type play at home and at school. Considering play is fluid and has no predetermined outcomes that can used to compare and rate student performance, many teachers are hesitant to use it in their classrooms since it’s difficult to prove that learning has occurred.
