Week 5
Assignment:
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH JOURNAL
For this week’s Journal entry, respond to the following three prompts:

Progress: What has been happening in the course since your previous Journal
entry?
Problems: Describe your skill and experience in doing interviews. What do you
bring to the table? What skills do you feel you lack?
Plans: Look toward the next week. What will you do to overcome the
challenges of inexperience and of access to participants?
Week 3
Entry: Progress: In the past few weeks, I have been focusing on gathering literature and
information relevant to my research question. I have leveraged databases and expanded my
search to interdisciplinary studies, which has resulted in a more comprehensive understanding of
the issue of domestic violence during and after COVID-19. Additionally, I have refined my
research question to focus specifically on the dynamics between offenders and survivors during
COVID-19 lockdowns.
Problems: One major obstacle I have faced is finding sufficient literature and data on the
enduring impacts of domestic violence during and after the pandemic. Although there are several
studies discussing the increase in domestic violence cases, there is limited research on the
sustainability and implications of such violence. Furthermore, finding qualitative studies that
delve into the nuanced dynamics between offenders and survivors has been challenging.
Plans: In the coming week, I plan to continue gathering more figures and reports on the
enduring impacts of domestic violence during COVID-19. Specifically, I will focus on
qualitative research that examines the relationship dynamics between offenders and survivors
during lockdowns. Additionally, I will expand my search to include other databases and
interdisciplinary studies to gather a well-rounded understanding of this complex issue. Refining
my research question to capture the specific sociocultural aspects of domestic violence during
COVID-19 will also be a priority. Overall, my goal is to gather enough information to carry out a
comprehensive and impactful study that can inform policy discussions and interventions.
Week 2, Journal
Entry:
Progress:
During the initial week of this class, I learned that what I need to study is how COVID-19 links
with domestic violence. The subject is perfect for me as it will give me a chance to see how the

issue of domestic violence has been affected by the coronavirus in Kenya. In my research
prospectus, I proposed studying the increase in crime, poverty, and interpersonal violence since
COVID-19. Nevertheless, my continued reading and exploration made me redefine my research
question on one specific thing: What kind of domestic violence was experienced or anticipated
during the COVID 19 pandemic, especially throughout those times when people were prevented
from freely moving around?
Problems:
I am encountering some difficulties when coming up with my research question. One major
challenge relates to collecting sufficient literature and information regarding this issue. Although
the literature has documented the surge of domestic violence cases amidst COVID-19, little is
known about its sustainability and implications. To illustrate further, I referred to the increased
reporting of domestic violence over five years; however, there is little data concerning the nature
of connections between perpetrators and victims in such cases throughout, before, and after the
COVID 19 crisis. Moreover, given that I take a sociocultural perspective on the matter under
investigation, it becomes essential to read relevant qualitative papers.
Plans:
During the coming week, I will concentrate on acquiring additional information and literature
about spousal abuse inside and after COVID-19 quarantine. Having gone through the litmus test,
I now understand that it is crucial to identify a significant enough issue because this would
enable me to get enough data and carry along all relevant parties, especially at policy levels. As
such, I intend to gather more figures and reports concerning the enduring impacts of domestic
violence throughout the COVID 19 phase. Specifically, I will look at qualitative research that
examines the relationship dynamics between offenders and survivors in their respective homes
when specific government measures are imposed to control the movement of people within such
units. Through this, it will be possible to determine the position of victims and perpetrators of
domestic violence concerning each other during the pandemic.
