For this assignment, you will write a formal proposal. As the name suggests, this assignment
asks you to propose action or ideas. Proposals can take various forms, but their common
denominator is that they persuade an audience to consider or undergo a proposed action.
Because proposals come in all shapes and sizes for a wide variety of rhetorical situations, this
assignment is very open for you to choose a proposal topic that suits your interests and/or
personal needs.
Your proposal should be designed to help some real organization solve some problem or
achieve some goal. A real situation is one you have actually encountered. It might involve your
employer, your major department, or a service group to which you belong. You may write a
proposal to the WBU administration or to politicians or public figures (local, state, or federal)
about an issue or situation you want to see changed. In addition, you may choose to write a
proposal for grant money for a local non-profit organization. In either case, your proposal
should be addressed to a real audience about a real situation or problem you want to see
resolved. Remember, your purpose in this assignment is to help your readers make a practical
decision or take a practical action in a real organization.
In order to support your claims and provide additional credibility, you will utilize scholarly
secondary research in the proposal. You will find a minimum of 2 sources for the proposal.
These sources should be referenced through quotes, paraphrases, and/or summaries in the
body of the proposal and cited according to either MLA or APA guidelines on a works cited or
references page. Your sources should be scholarly, peer reviewed sources. Consider using the
library’s database to find the sources, and if you need assistance with your sources, reach out
to a reference librarian.
You might consider including visuals or graphics to illustrate the points you’re making. Make
sure the images are either your own or that you’re providing citation information, giving credit
to the original creator of the image. In particular, visuals and graphics can be beneficial when
discussing the current situation, proposed situation, and budget. You are welcome to use them
in whatever part of the proposal they enhance your argument.
In Week 6, one of your assignments will ask you to submit a progress report memo. This
progress report memo will address your completed activities, ongoing activities, future
