NURSING THEORY & ADVANCED PRACTICE
CASE STUDIES APPLICATION OF NURSING THEORIES (15 %)
Guidelines:
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the application of a nursing theory
to practice, communicate the analysis of and proposed strategies for the use of a
theory in nursing practice, and demonstrates logical and creative thinking in the
analysis and application of a theory to nursing practice.
Review the clinical case and apply your chosen theory to the case. The final paper is to
be typed according to APA format and no more than 5 pages in length. The paper
should include a title page and reference list; however, these pages are not to be
included in the final count.
Guide with the Questions and Process for Determining Application to Practice (Table
18-1) (Located in McEwin & Wills (4th ed.), (pg.413).
– Are theory goals and practice goals congruent?
o Examine the goal of the theory and compare it with the outcomes or
goals of nursing practice (standards of practice, personal views of
nursing).
– Is the context of the theory congruent with the practice situation?
o Examine the theory to determine context for application and compare it
with the context of the situation at hand.
– Is there similarity between theory variables and practice variables?
o Compare the theoretic variables (concepts) and the variables recognized
to directly influence the practice situation to determine whether all
essential concepts are addressed in the theory.
– Are explanations of the theory sufficient to be used as a basis for nursing
action?
o Use expert judgment about nursing actions that are implied or explicit
within the theory to determine sufficiency; examine correlation between
theoretical and practice variables.
– Does research evidence support the theory?
o Conduct a review of the literature for research support of the theory;
critically examine study findings for validity and applicability to practice.
– How can the theory influence nursing practice and the nursing unit?
o Consider ways in which an approach will affect nursing practice and a
nursing unit; plan changes including observation and recording of
factors relevant to the theory’s application.
Content
– Introduction to the paper includes a few general statements on the idea of
nursing theory being applied to solve problems/issues in nursing practice,
regardless of the specialty area of practice.
– The selected nursing theory can be a grand theory, a middle-range theory, or a
practice theory.
– Description of the problem/issue for which strategies will be developed.
– The problem to be resolved can be in nursing leadership, nursing education,
nursing informatics, or health policy. Scholarly evidence supporting the issue is
included.

Introduction.
Faye Abdalla is a well-known nursing researcher, military nurse, and nurse theorist. Learn the
main ideas behind her “21 Nursing Problems” nursing theory, how it works, and how it affects
nursing.
Faye Abdallah was born in New York on March 13, 1919, to a Scottish mother and an Algerian
father. After that, her family relocated to New Jersey, where she finished high school. Faye
Abdallah obtained a nursing diploma from Fitkin Memorial Hospital, which was sufficient for her
to work as a nurse in the 1940s. She believed that nursing care should be determined by research
rather than the quantity of hours spent providing it.
Faye Abdallah began her career as a health nurse in her early twenties at a private school. From
1945 to 1949, she held her first administrative job on the Yale University faculty. She had to
instruct a course called “120 Principles of Nursing Practice” at the time using a common nursing
textbook produced by the National League for Nursing.
The “Twenty-One Nursing Issues Theory” that Faye Abdallah created, which connects the ideas
of health, nursing problems, and problem-solving, is well recognized.
According to her, nursing is both an art and a science that shapes a nurse’s attitude, intellectual
capacity, and technical abilities into the desire and capacity to assist people in coping with their
health requirements, whether they are ill or well.
Abdallah’s 21 Nursing Problems Theory
According to Faye Glenn Abdallah’s theory, “Nursing is based on an art and science that molds the
attitudes, intellectual competencies, and technical skills of the individual nurse into the desire and
ability to help people, sick or well, cope with their health needs.”

3
Philosophical Underpinnings of Abdallah’s 21 Nursing Problems Theory
The physical, sociological, and emotional demands of patients, the various forms of
interpersonal interactions between the patient and nurse, and the universal components of patient
care are the three categories into which the 21 nursing challenges are divided. To categorize
nursing challenges, she examined nursing research as well as Henderson’s list of the 14
fundamental human needs. Here are the first 21 nursing issues that Abdellah raised:
Major Assumptions of 21 Nursing Problems Theory
Assumptions
The underlying presumptions of Abdallah’s “21 Nursing Problems Theory” concern change and
anticipated changes that have an impact on nursing, the necessity of understanding the connections
between social enterprises and social problems, the effects of issues like poverty, racism, pollution,
education, and other issues on health and the provision of healthcare, changing nursing education,
continuing education for professional nurses, and the development of nursing leaders from
underserved groups.
Major Concepts of 21 Nursing Problems Theory
The approach includes relevant ideas for nursing and health issues as well as logic-based problemsolving.
Individual
She does not specify her opinions or presumptions regarding the nature of people, yet she refers to
nursing receivers as individuals (and families).
Application of Theory in Nursing Practice “faye Abdallah theory”.
4
Health
The goal of nursing services is health, or achieving it. Abdallah refers to “complete health needs”
and “a healthy condition of mind and body,” despite the fact that she does not define health.
The dynamic pattern of functioning that results from continual interaction with internal and external
stimuli may be regarded as the best use of the resources currently available to reduce vulnerabilities.
Society
“Planning for optimum health on local, state, and worldwide levels” includes society. But as Abdellah
elaborates on her principles, it becomes evident that the individual is the nursing service’s main point
of concentration.
Nursing Issues
Health needs for the client might be seen as difficulties, either overtly as an obvious condition or
covertly as a condition that is hidden or concealed.
Covert problems are frequently overlooked or misunderstood because they can have an emotional,
sociological, or interpersonal basis. However, in many cases, resolving the covert issues will also
resolve the overt ones.
issue solving
To provide overt and covert nursing problems with quality treatment, nurses must be able to
recognize them. These criteria can be satisfied via the problem-solving process by identifying the
issue, choosing relevant data, generating hypotheses, testing hypotheses through data collection, and
changing hypotheses as necessary depending on findings from the data.

Application using case study.
A 34-year-old female patient was referred to Hospital. She was 169 cm tall, weighed 75
kg, and had a BMI of 26.3 kg/m2.
She was married but didn’t have any kids. She had never been in a hospital or undergone
surgery. She spent her leisure time at the gym and reading books because the company
she was working for had closed, thus she was no longer employed. She barely slept
during the day and slept for eight hours at night.
She had an inconsistent defecation pattern (1 time per day), and she was constipated.
In order to treat her side and navel pain, she was sent to the hospital.
She claimed that nothing could make the pain go away because it was too acute and got
worse when she lied down. her level of pain was 6.
She experienced headache, fever, chills, severe diarrhea, and nausea. After being initially
referred to Hospital and receiving an appendicitis diagnosis, her right ovary had two
cysts, which were removed by appendectomy after additional exams revealed them. Due
to her constipation and high WBC, she was not permitted to be discharged. Type 2
diabetes, anemia, two cases of measles (in childhood and adolescence), and a childhood
allergy were all previously identified in her. She had no medical history in her family
other than her mother’s diabetes.

List of diagnoses in terms of priority
Diagnosis 1pain in the surgically treated area (physical domain) brought on by tissue damage and
muscle reaction spasms.
Goal: The patient exhibits symptoms of pain relief, such as not expressing any discomfort, losing
the compressed state of the face and body, engaging in personal activities, and maintaining normal
vital signs (T=36°C RR=18/min PR=78/min BP=120/80mmhg).
Measures Examining the patient’s typical responses to pain, looking at nonverbal pain indicators,
getting information from the patient about the type, distribution, and location of their pain,
looking at aggravating or mitigating factors, performing pain-relieving activities like back
massages and changing positions, and teaching relaxation techniques like deep breathing,
distraction, positive visualization, and music therapy (Diagnoses, 2017).
Diagnosis 2: Reduced gastrointestinal motility due to decreased activity, decreased liquid intake,
decreased intake of high-fiber foods, and suppression of the excretion reflex because of reluctance
to eliminate in bed are all related with constipation (physical domain).
Goal: returning to her natural excretion pattern (once a day).
Measures routine abdominal muscle strengthening exercises (Kegels), escalating activity levels
in accordance with tolerance, encouraging the patient to urinate when necessary, assisting the
patient to use the restroom, maintaining privacy during urination, drinking enough liquid, and
including high-fiber foods in her diet (Diagnoses, 2017).
Application of Theory in Nursing Practice “faye Abdallah theory”.
16
Diagnosis 3: Anxiety (psychological domain) related to: insufficient knowledge of diagnostic
and therapeutic options; effects of the illness on the patient’s lifestyle and role; excruciating pain;
high cost of care.
Goal: showing the patient’s reduced fear and anxiety, removal of the compressed state, sense of
tranquility, return to their natural skin tone, and restoration of their normal vital signs.
Measures: teaching the patient’s family how to assist her; learning relaxation techniques
including deep breathing, distraction, and positive visualization; urging the patient to
acknowledge their worries and concerns and offer
Giving the patient the right feedback, reassuring them that nurses are present at all times, and
communicating securely while upholding the confidentiality principle
Diagnosis 4: Problems with physical activity (physical domain) include pain, weakness, and
weariness as well as sleep disorders and issues with resting. People who have surgical wounds
or are afraid of falling may also find it difficult to engage in physical activity.
Goal: exercising as much as possible while taking into account the restrictions of medical
procedures and surgery.
Measures: examining the reasons that limit physical activity, changing the rest-activity interval,
encouraging the patient to engage in activities and self-care to the extent that she is able,
requesting the patient’s companions to assist her on walks, and performing isometric exercises
Diagnosis 5
A disturbance in sleep patterns has been associated to: fear and anxiety, background noise,
strange settings, pain, and decreased physical activity (psycho-physical domain).
Goal: Getting enough sleep, feeling alert when you get up, and not yawning a lot.
Application of Theory in Nursing Practice “faye Abdallah theory”.
17
Measures Examining the indications and symptoms of sleep disorders; spotting behavioral
changes like irritability and lethargy; attending to basic requirements like hunger, thirst, and
excretion before bed; lowering worry and fear; and eliminating noise and unnecessary activities
(Diagnoses, 2017).
Conclusion:
The idea of nursing functioning helps to raise the standard of nursing care. This theory can offer
a suitable foundation for identifying nursing issues. Henderson’s theory is the source of
Abdallah’s theory, which is actually seen as an extension of Henderson’s 14 principles. It merely
outlines 21 major task categories and lacks any specific tools. According to renowned nursing
models like those of Henderson, Maslow, and Erikson, questions were created in each of the
study’s 21 categories of Abdallah’s theory.
