Description
Task: Prepare a technical report no longer than one page in length (figures and/or tables can be on a second page) presenting the results of a statistical analysis that addresses the scenario below. It should have three sections with headings: Objective Statement, Methods, and Results and Conclusions. Upload a pdf or Word (pdf recommended) of your report and an Excel file (upload as .xlsx or .xls) OR picture of handwritten work for your calculations.
Scenario: A new express highway is proposed that would run through the South Bronx, a New York City neighborhood with a high poverty rate and high percentage of minority and immigrant residents. A community group requests that a study be done on the potential air quality impacts of the project, citing research showing that marginalized communities (low income, minority, immigrant, etc.) are generally exposed to more air pollution. The transportation administration agrees to do the study if there is evidence that the South Bronx in particular is at risk for poor air quality.
Data: The data(attached) from the City of New York Environment and Health Data Portal provide measurements of PM2.5, a measure of harmful particulate matter in the air associated with vehicle exhaust. There are two sheets, one providing data from the South Bronx and one providing citywide average values. Long-term PM2.5 values above 12 mcg/m3 are considered unhealthy and associated with heart disease, asthma, and low birth weight.
Suggestions for Success
1. Review the previous statistical writing assignments to make sure you are including the necessary components and an appropriate level of detail in each section of your report.
2. Use hypothesis testing to support your conclusion. Review the lecture notes on selecting hypothesis tests to ensure you are choosing the correct test for the data provided and the hypothesis you are testing. State your hypotheses in the methods section.
3. Include figures and/or tables if they directly support your conclusion. If a figure or table is not discussed in your report, it may be unnecessary detail that should be deleted.
4. Base your conclusions just on your analysis of the data provided. You are not expected to do outside research or consider external factors in making your conclusion.
(don’t worry about checking the nearly normal condition when checking the assumptions of your hypothesis tests)
