Analysis of Determinants of Health in Nebraska
Socioeconomic factors have been recognized as vital indicators of the health and wellbeing of the general population. Social determinants of health (SDOH), including housing,
socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, education, and employment, influence an individual’s
well-being. Research on social and economic factors in Nebraska and other states has led to an
increased understanding of how these factors affect health. Nebraska ranks 17 in the 2023 annual
report (America’s Health Rankings, 2023). This assignment analyzes various factors that
contribute to the overall well-being of Nebraskans.
A strong relationship exists between socioeconomic status (SES) and physical and mental
health. SES encompasses income, financial security, education attainment, subjective perception
of social class, and social status. In 2022, median household income in Nebraska was $71,722,
and per capita income in the last 12 months was $38,585. This increased from the previous year
when the median household income was $66,644. However, the income is lower than the
national median household income of $74,580. 11. 7 % of the population lived in poverty,
ranking Nebraska at 17 (America’s Health Rankings, 2023a). Based on the GINI calculation of
wage distribution, Nebraska’s income inequality was 0.444 in 2021, a 0.499% increase from
2020 (Data USA, 2024). According to New Hampshire Employment Security (2023), Nebraska’s
unemployment rate was 2.3% in 2023, ranking 5th out of 50 states. From these data, Nebraska
appears to be in a good financial position with strong job opportunities and savings. Stable
employment enhances access to health insurance and resources, hence access to quality and
timely healthcare services. High and medium-income households can afford rental homes with
good living conditions, promoting good health. However, Nebraska lacks affordable housing for
extremely low-income household incomes, which results in poor health outcomes for this
3
population. The surging home prices have intensified affordability challenges for many lowincome communities in the state. Home prices in the states increased by 26% between 2020 and
2021 (Kauffman & John, 2022). Therefore, high-quality, stable housing, employment, higher
education, and income levels correlate positively with better health outcomes and vice versa.
In response to the identified socioeconomic factors and their influence on health, the
Nebraska government should build affordable housing programs, especially for low-income
households. Notably, the government should collaborate with private developers and community
organizations to facilitate the construction of affordable housing units. The partnership should
focus on incentivizing private developers through subsidies and tax credits to encourage new
affordable housing developments and rehabilitating existing rental houses to meet low-income
households’ needs. Nebraska offers tax abatement for housing projects that reserve at least 20%
of units for low-income families (Kim, 2024). The government can revise this policy to improve
eligibility for developers to build more units. Also, the government should streamline approval
processes for affordable housing projects to encourage developers to develop affordable housing
units. Besides, expanding affordable housing trust funds and community land trusts promotes
new developments through financial assistance.
In addition, government entities should create employment and career development
programs to further reduce unemployment and poverty levels. Organizing seminars and
workshops improves professional skills, enhancing access to job opportunities. Also, the
government should collaborate with local employers to connect job seekers with available
employment opportunities. Moreover, it should develop educational initiatives to inform
residents, particularly those from low-income households, of various socioeconomic factors and
their impacts on health. For instance, it can conduct community campaigns focusing on financial
4
literacy to guide budgeting, investment, and saving strategies. The campaigns should emphasize
how financial stability positively correlates with physical and mental health. The government
should collaborate with local community organizations to ensure these educational programs are
accessible and culturally and economically relevant.
