I want to convince my audience that the Gun Control is necessary.

Persuasive Speech Requirements and Guidelines

Your final graded speech in this course is the Persuasive Speech. Considered by many to be the most challenging, this assignment can be a lot of fun for students. Let’s talk about the requirements for this speech.

You’ve work on three speeches in this course. Each one has asked different things from you, but by and large you have been spending your time telling your classmates about something. It may have been how to change a tire, a little bit about you, or where you like to vacation, but you basically gave them information to use as they saw fit. With the Persuasive Speech, we change this just a bit. You will still prep your audience on your topic by informing them about something, but as you inform, you also have a very specific end goal in mind that seeks to change their behavior in some way. Essentially, you want to get your audience to do what you want by presenting logical and compelling information in a smooth and fantastic delivery. As we know from our section on ethics – this may not be easy. Some speeches deal with topics that may impact people’s values, morals or believes – and getting someone to change those things is not easy at all. That is why you’ll have to work hard, have strong research, and practice.

In the Persuasive Speech, you will have seven (7) to ten (10) minutes; but again, this time you are trying to change someone’s behavior. This short time frame means you will have to be narrow, concise, and use all the skills you’ve learned this semester. Only by practicing your speech will you have an idea for how long it is – and that can impact your grade. There will be a point deduction for going both under and over these time requirements; you will lose half a point for every ten seconds you are under or over time.

Only you can decide what is important to go into your speech and only you can make decisions on how to logically lay out your argument for maximum success. This speech is not one that I suggest you work on just a few days before the assignment is due. Really put some time and energy into this one – it will pay off.

Begin by asking yourself – if I didn’t already agree, what would it take for me to change my mind? Think about the things you would require be presented in order for you to modify your behavior. This can be a good basis for what others need – and remember, this still needs to be audience centered.

This is also a great time to conduct the Audience Analysis surveys we talked about. If you take the time to find out how your audience feels about your topic, then you can structure your argument more strategically. If you want to survey your audience, contact your professor for his or her preference on how that survey can be distributed.

Much like the Define/Describe speech, this speech also requires research. You absolutely must include and cite your sources. Not only would failing to do so be plagiarism, but as you are trying to change people’s behavior, you have a moral obligation as an ethical speaker. And, as you heard in the previous modules, citing your sources helps your credibility, and this is one instance where you want to enhance your credibility as much as possible. You MUST include AND CITE any research resources in this speech. Information on how to cite your resource verbally is available in the “Citing Research Resources” video lecture of the previous module. Now is a great time to go back and review that information so you are clear on the requirements. Detailed information about the types of research resources you may use is available in the “Guidelines and Requirements for Research Resources” video lecture and document in Module 6. To briefly review, you MUST cite at least 3 research resources in this speech. Of these resources, only ONE may be an online source; your other 2 research resources MUST be print sources. You may include more than 3 research resources if you’d like; three is just the minimum. However, regardless of the total number of research resources used, ONLY ONE may be an online source.

It cannot be stressed enough that the ultimate goal of this speech is to influence behavior. If you do not overtly persuade your audience by having a call to action at the end of your speech, you will fall short of this goal. As you learn in your readings, this call to action can be for passive agreement, but you must specifically state what you want your audience to do.
