STUDENT SPEECH ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze another student’s speech so that you will have a
better understanding of the grading criteria used in this course, as well as learn to listen for key
concepts we have discussed so far in this course.
Length & Formatting: This paper should be two (2) – three (2) pages long, and should be
formatted as follows:
● Double spaced
● 1 inch margins
● Regular character spacing
● 12-point font
● Times New Roman font
Speech to Be Reviewed: A sample student speech is available in the “Speech Analysis
Requirements” section of Module 3.
In order to keep your paper organized and focused, please discuss the following areas:




Speech Introduction: Was the introduction effective? What device did the speaker use
to get the audience’s attention? Was there a clear preview of his/her main points of the
speech? How did the speaker establish credibility?
Body and Signposts: Was the body well developed and clear? What was the transition
from the introduction to the body? What were the main points of his/her speech? Did the
speaker cite sources in their speech, if so what were the sources? What signposts were
present?
Speech conclusion: Was the conclusion effective? How did the speaker indicate they
were finishing their speech? Did the speaker recap their main points?
Overall Impressions: Please give you opinion of the speech, including what was done
well and what areas need improvement.
You are welcome to extend beyond the questions above but these should give you a baseline for
starting your analysis.
