As you can see from reading Chapter 1, issues that are salient at a given point in time influence the topics that social psychologists choose to study. For example, events of WWII seemed to inspire research in the areas of conformity, obedience, intergroup relations, and aggression, among others. In addition, much research stems from observations that are then tested scientifically (e.g., Norman Triplett observed bicyclists going faster when cycling with others than when cycling alone). Given current national and global issues, in addition to your own observations, what topics do you think will receive attention from social psychologists over the next several years? Why?
