As scholars, we are always building on other people’s work. Every great idea is only possible because it is based on previous scholarship and learning. This is one of the reasons for why academic integrity is so important. Though we have a policy for cheating, plagiarism, and obtaining unfair advantage, what motivates our honest work should be based on a responsibility to the community of scholars we are a part of.
In order for us to think a bit about academic integrity, I would like you to watch a talk by anthropologist Christen Smith. In this talk, she explains her project “Cite Black Women”. Please watch up to minute ( 13:01 )
The policy of academic integrity also includes the use of artificial intelligence (such as ChatGTP). College policy stipulates that: “Unless specifically authorized by the instructor, the use of artificial intelligence technology to generate coursework is a violation of the CUNY/College Policy on Academic Integrity, and constitutes both cheating and plagiarism. Submitting work generated by someone or something other than yourself as if were your own is cheating. Presenting ideas, concepts, words etc. without providing appropriate credit to your sources is plagiarism.” Though I will not police student work, if I perceive that you are utilizing artificial intelligence technology to complete your coursework, you will receive a deduction in your final grade.
