What does happiness mean to you? Do you think of happiness as essential to a life
well-lived? Do you think happiness is or should be the most important goal in people’s
lives? What would be other concepts besides happiness that you might use instead to
refer to a “good life”? To answer these questions, you might find it helpful to think
about what in your life makes you happy (and/or unhappy) and what (that you do not
currently have in your life) you think you would need to be more happy or fulfilled in your
life.
Flag question: Question 2
Question 225 pts
Think about things in a person’s social environment that you think would or might affect
happiness (or well-being, quality of life, or whatever other concept you think is better
than happiness in capturing what you think most people want out of life). Use your prior
knowledge of sociology to come up with ideas about how social environment could
affect happiness. You might also think about how your own happiness or fulfillment in
life compares to other people you know. Are there some people you know who seem to
be happier than you? Are there some people who seem to be less happy than
you? When making these comparisons, think about what differences there could be in
life circumstances that could explain the differences in happiness.
Flag question: Question 3
Question 325 pts
Turn your ideas generated in #2 into research questions. For example, if I think that the
amount of money a person has might affect their happiness, then my research question
would be: “How does money affect happiness?” See if you can come up with at least
five such questions. Come up with as many as you can.
Flag question: Question 4
Question 425 pts
Pick one of the questions you came up with in #3. Come up with a basic plan as to how
you would go about finding out the answer to your question. If you are familiar with
some sociological research methodologies, please feel free to think about how you
might use one or more of these to find an answer to your question. If you are not
familiar or comfortable talking about sociological research methodologies, just explain in
your own words using your own ideas about how you could conduct research that would
help you answer your question(s).
The purpose of preparing an annotated reference list is to keep your knowledge
organized so that, when it is time to write a draft of your research paper, you will have
all of your references accurately listed with a summary of the key points you took from
each of them.
We will begin with a shared reference list, and I will even guide you through identifying
the key points you should know from each.
The first step in preparing an annotated reference list is to alphabetically organize your
reference list and to include all necessary information in the a particular style
(depending on the specifications of any particular writing assignment). In this course,
we will use APA style.

Please copy and paste the list of references above into your own word document and
begin working on providing summaries of key points of these after each entry. I would
suggest that you highlight the references themselves in bold type so that you may easily
distinguish the reference from your summary of key points.
Even though I have every confidence that you would be capable of doing this work on
your own, I will be helping you with summarizing of each source so that we all get on
solid footing as we begin our semester-long preparation of an annotated reference list.
1. Add ALL of these references to the annotated reference list that you prepared for
your week 2 assignment. Insert each of these references in alphabetical order:

2. Choose at least two of the readings listed above to read. Following the model of
what we did last week, add important points from these readings in your annotated
reference list. (Later you will fill in notes for any of the readings you did not annotate;
you will be able to use my notes and/or some of the notes I compile based on student
submissions. For now, you are only required to read and annotate 2 readings; you are
always welcome to do more!!)
3. Submit your revised annotated reference list. This should include any revisions I
asked you to make on your week 2 assignment, all of the new references arranged
alphabetically among the rest of them, and your notes on your choice of 2 of the new
readings. You must include page references for summarized, paraphrased, and quoted
text.
. Read through the PowerPoint presentation for Module 5.
2. Look at the lists on slides 8, 10, and 12. Highlight the topics that most interest
you. Slides 8 and 10 are overlapping lists that deal with sociological concepts (and/or
variables) that affect happiness of individuals. Slide 12 is a list (with many of the same
items as on 8 and 10) that focuses on factors that affect the overall happiness of a
society as a whole.
3. Using slides 8 and 10, pick any three sociological concepts and/or variables that
could affect individual happiness. Choose the three that you would be most interested in
knowing more about. Explain why you picked the three you did. When a concept or
variable is defined broadly, as they mostly are, be sure to articulate the particular
interests you have within the broader concept. (If, for example, I am interested in the
effect of social integration on an individual’s happiness, am I interested in social
integration within a family or friendship group? Or am I interested in the social
integration of the neighborhood/community in which an individual lives? If you are
interested in all aspects of social integration, say so and include each type of social
integration you are interested in knowing more about.
4. Using slide 12, pick any three sociological variables that might influence the overall
happiness of a society. Choose the three that you would be most interested in knowing
more about. Explain why you picked the three you did.
5. Explain the key differences between a sociological perspective
on individual happiness and a sociological perspective on societal happiness. If you
were to imagine doing your own research on both individual happiness and societal
happiness, how would your approach to studying individual happiness differ from your
approach to studying societal happiness?
