Suicide Amongst Adolescent
Manzar, M. D., Albougami, A., Usman, N., & Mamun, M. A. (2021). Suicide among
adolescents and youths during the COVID‐19 pandemic lockdowns: A press media
reports‐based exploratory study. Journal of child and adolescent psychiatric
nursing, 34(2), 139-146.
This exploratory study investigates suicide incidents among adolescents and youths
during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns using press media reports. The research identified
several trends, including a significant number of suicides occurring after a month of lockdown
implementation, reporting from both developing and developed countries, a concerning number
of suicides among school-going teens, and hanging as the most common method. Lockdownrelated distress and academic stress were primary stressors.
Curtin, S. C. (2020). State suicide rates among adolescents and young adults aged 10–24:
United States, 2000–2018.
Curtin examines suicide rates among individuals aged 10–24 in the United States from
2000 to 2018, highlighting a substantial national increase in suicide rates among this age group,
which grew by 57.4% from 2007 to 2018. State-level variations are observed, with 42 states
experiencing significant increases and eight states showing nonsignificant increases during the
period from 2007 to 2018. Notably, Alaska had the highest suicide rate, while states in the
Northeast had lower rates.
Twenge, J. M. (2020). Increases in depression, self‐harm, and suicide among US adolescents
after 2012 and links to technology use: possible mechanisms. Psychiatric Research
and Clinical Practice, 2(1), 19-25.
Twenge (2020) discusses the concerning increases in depression, self-harm, and suicide
among U.S. adolescents after 2012 and explores the potential links to technology use. The article
highlights a sharp rise in mental health issues, particularly among girls and young women, during
the early 2010s. It suggests that the prevalence of digital media and smartphone use may have
influenced mental health issues through various mechanisms, including cyberbullying, toxic
online environments, and the spread of self-harm information.
Charpignon, M. L., Ontiveros, J., Sundaresan, S., Puri, A., Chandra, J., Mandl, K. D., &
Majumder, M. S. (2022). Evaluation of suicides among US adolescents during the
COVID-19 pandemic. JAMA pediatrics, 176(7), 724-726.
This study investigates changes in suicide-related mortality among US adolescents during
the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings reveal heterogeneity among states, with some
experiencing increases in adolescent suicides during the pandemic. In contrast, suicides among
adults aged 35 and older followed a downward trend. The study emphasizes the need for targeted
interventions to address the mental health challenges faced by adolescents, particularly those
who have lost caregivers during the pandemic.
