I appreciate your views on making healthcare accessible for all. I think that when you have for-profit organizations in medicine there is always going to be the argument that healthcare is a commodity. This is due to the fact that these organizations can bill more, in turn making more money. This is a slippery slope due to to fact that if the organization has a bad quarter and revenue is down then budgets start to get tighter and shortcuts are made to save money which trickles down to the fact that patient care is put second to profit. I often see patients who have health insurance, yet their insurance will not cover off market medications which are astronomically expensive. Insurance companies get away with this because the drug is “off-label” and the pharmaceutical companies can price the drug at whatever they feel it is worth. There are even instances where insurance will cover only the generic drug, yet patients experience side effects from the generic drug and therefore have to pay out of pocket for the name brand. While making health care accessible for all is the first step, making patient centered treatment affordable for all is the end goal.
