Homework
A social work intern is conducting an early learning intervention
with children. The intern gathered the children’s baseline
knowledge scores before the start of the intervention and then
measured their knowledge scores again at the end of the
intervention. The intern is interested in examining if there is a
statistically significant difference in students’ knowledge scores
before and after the intervention. The intern’s data file is
attached. Focus on the “pretest” and “posttest” columns.
For this homework, write the following in a Word or Google Doc:

State your research question

State your independent and dependent variables

State your research hypothesis

State your null hypothesis

Conduct a paired t-test in JASP with the intern data. Here is how
to do it (also detailed in this week’s PowerPoint):
1.
1. Create a spreadsheet with the intern data so that you can run it
in JASP:
a. Open Excel or Google Docs
b. Create two variables: one “pretest” and two “posttest” – each
variable should have its own column
c. Enter all pretest scores in the pretest variable, and enter posttest
scores in posttest variable
d. Save your file as .csv;
a. If using JASP online: Upload file to OSF
2. Open in JASP – If on your computer: Open > My Computer >
[Your file];
a. If using JASP online: Open > OSF > Log in to OSF > [Your file]
3. Double check that the variables are measured at the correct
levels
4. Run a descriptives table that includes BOTH pretest and posttest
scores
a. Include in your table: mean, median, mode, standard deviation,
range, minimum, and maximum.
5. Create a graph of both pretest and posttest scores to show
distribution (click “Distribution plots” and “Display density”)
6. Run your T-test (see PowerPoint for details)

Interpret output; be sure to report:
o
Your t-test output table
o
Your descriptives output table
o
Write one – two sentences describing each of the variables
o
Your graphs
o
Write an explanation of paired t-test your results in sentence
form. Use this format, and fill in the information in red based on
your results:
o
I ran a paired t-test in JASP to examine if there was a statistically
significant difference in students’ knowledge scores before and
after the intervention. I set the alpha level to ____ . Results show
that there was/was not a significant difference between the
pretest and posttest scores, where p=___, df=____, t = ____.
Therefore, I reject/do not reject the null hypothesis. In
summary, [in simple terms, what does this mean about the
intervention?]
