RESEARCH PROJECT
The purpose of this research assignment is to provide each student an opportunity to manage a survey
project. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the evaluation process, develop technical writing skills
and present survey findings. This is an individual assignment and not intended to be a group project.
This assignment is worth a total of 50 points. The assignment should be typed, double spaced, applying
a 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins. Since writing is an important component of this
class, students are required to spell-check their work before submitting it to the instructor. Spelling,
grammatical, and/or formatting errors will be penalized via point deductions.
The assignment activities include collecting and evaluating a minimum of two (2) actual surveys from
real organizations or professional resources to use in the development of a new survey instrument that
you will create. Each student will develop a park needs assessment survey for the County of San Diego
Department of Parks and Recreation operated parks in the community of Spring Valley and prepare a
written report.
Include an attractive cover page for this report that contains your name and the name of the agency that
you created your survey for (County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation). You will also
need to include a table of contents page.
SECTION 1
Introduction (10 points)
The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation has been identified as the organization
where your project will be conducted; therefore you will need to provide descriptive information about
the County of San Diego and specifically Spring Valley, CA. In written paragraph form, include
demographic information and facts about Spring Valley i.e. population, housing data, resident data,
ethnicity data, median household income, total park acreage and number of parks, families below
poverty line, history of the community etc. Provide information about the existing types of facilities and
programs offered through the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation as well as
facilities and programs offered by other parks and recreation providers near Spring Valley.
Survey Review (10 points)
Collect a minimum of two (2) actual surveys from real organizations or professional resources to use in
the development of a new survey instrument for the County of San Diego. Critique each survey. What
do you like and dislike about the surveys? Are they easy to read? Are the directions clear? Indicate
items you are considering using in your own survey and explain why you want to use them. These two
(2) surveys will need to be turned in with your project and included in the appendix.
SECTION 2
Draft Survey (5 points)
Design a survey. Include only one open ended type of question on the survey. Use guideline
information about surveys from class material and include a) Title of survey and short introduction (2-3
lines), b) Instructions for responding to each question (Very important! Do not assume that the
respondents will know how to answer the questions), c) park use and amenities questions, d)
demographic information (at least two (2) items), and e) thank you. The survey must be one (1) page in
length. A page is one side of an 8 ½ by 11-inch piece of paper.

Purpose, Objectives, Procedures (10 points)
Objectives of the evaluation
Write in good form with action verbs; measurable objectives; could include outcomes. (You need at
least 3 objectives).
Procedures
Include information on the following:
• Who will receive the survey and how will they be selected? How will it be distributed? Will you
offer an incentive to return the survey?
• Describe the survey instrument. This should include the number of sections in the survey,
purpose of each section, discussion of the type of questions and description of the response
choices. Address such things as the lay out, length, and the sequencing of questions.
SECTION 3
Pilot Test & Survey Revisions (10 points)
Students will work with the instructor to develop procedures for the pilot test of the survey. A pilot test
is given to 5 to 10 people who have knowledge about the survey topics. It is administered to identify
problems with the survey before giving it to respondents, clients, members, or participants. People who
take the pilot test respond to the survey items and then provide comments about the survey.
Report the results of the pilot test; describe problem areas and make recommendations for revising the
instrument. Discuss the revisions you made and tell how you think the changes will improve the
instrument. The 5 – 10 pilot test surveys will need to be turned in with your project and included in
the appendix.
Final Survey (5 points)
Based on the pilot test, revise the draft survey and submit your final survey
