Active Directory (AD) is a directory service used for centralized domain resources management, including some aspects of identity. AD was developed and release on Windows Server operating systems in 2000. The design of AD, which allows the organization of domain resources in a logical hierarchical tree-structure, was based on widespread input from participants through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
