1. Haas states, “…there is the reality that there are those who do not contribute
what they could to society and the economy and as a result increase the
financial burden of the rest of us. All this adds up to a strong case that the
obligation to care for others, be it for their sake or our own, it is critical for a
democratic society.” (page 110) What are your thoughts on this statement? Is
it democracy-critical for us to care for one another?

individual rights. How do you think the government should balance promoting
the common good while also considering individual rights?

that make opportunity equal in practice as well as principle.” What are your
