Ways to solve homelessness in California as a community.
Homelessness is an ongoing crisis to which the media pays very little attention. It is a
matter involving decisions based on life and death. According to an article published
by THE
SUN in March 2022, “In January 2020, the last time the state officially tailed its
unsheltered
population, 161,548 Californians were identified as homeless.” Providing immediate
shelter is
one way that would give temporary relief, but the contribution of job training sessions
and health
counseling would avail for longer periods of reassurance. To counteract homelessness
in
California it is necessary to identify the areas in crisis and provide immediate shelter,
employment opportunities, and medical assistance.
Living in California is expensive and there is no doubt about that as Capitol Weekly
tells
us that “66,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County; about twothirds
of them are in the City of Los Angeles.” Houses here are so costly that if a person once
shifts to a
house changing it would be a tough matter of consideration. If a person earning a
good salary
sometimes struggles to make the family’s ends meet, homeless people should be given
high
priority in this case. The increase in prices is not only stealing their houses but their
lives too.
California’s climate is very dry and sunny and there have been abrupt changes in the
weather
nowadays. One time there is a heat stroke going on the next day there is a dust storm,
to protect
our community of homeless people, immediate sheltering is required. Nowadays, tents
can be
Shehzad 2
seen put up on footpaths and outside of offices. These also belong to the poor people
who can’t
afford to reside in luxury. Also disturbing the pedestrian pathway. According to the
LA times,
“By seeking to shift responsibility to the county for sheltering this population, as the
settlement
lays out, the city effectively reduced the number of homeless people it would be
responsible for
housing.” It is not only the duty of the government to provide funds and welfare but
also puts a
heavy responsibility on the people of the society to accept the homeless residents. A
lot of people
are so full of their superiority complex that they forget the fact that respect and honor
are rights
of every citizen you interact with.
Giving the homeless a chance to provide for themselves and their families can be the
onset for many to a successful route. Employment opportunities and job training
sessions are to
be provided within companies despite the educational degree but the experience.
People with
high-class education can be overtaken by people with experience who in this case are
mostly
homeless. The upper system is aware of this crisis and Capitol Weekly states that the
“Government and corporate funders must prioritize successful workforce training and job
placement programs to help individuals at high risk of homelessness gain economic
stability.”
Dependable jobs will not only give the helpless individuals maintenance with housing
facilities
but also give positive feedback of success in numerous fields. Individuals who can help out
people on the edge of homelessness should interact with them “with transitional jobs and
then
into jobs in the private sector, in the public sector within the City and County, or in
vocational
training programs.” This way homelessness would not become a factor contributing to the
loss
of jobs being faced. Overall, this factor will affect the economy of the whole nation, hence it
needs to be given a thought.
Without psychological and physiological health, a person is nothing. Life seems useless
when you’re not in a good health to mind your affairs. Nowadays so many campaigns are
Shehzad 3
brought forward regarding self-love and self-importance. Counseling free of cost to
recognize
these factors is a right of every homeless civilian. Money should be given priority over the
health
of our citizens. People under the stress of paying bills for one’s own health consider it a
burden
and indeed it is, what will a poor person worry about their health or the money they don’t
have.
The California Health Care Foundation realizes that “Being homeless is dangerous to your
health”. Homelessness does not only make you a vulnerable target of serious illness
and
psychological problems, but it also decreases the normal length of the human life
span.
According to the California Health Care Foundation “life expectancies 20 to 30 years
shorter
than that of the general population” for the poor. In such cases of need people also
find drugs
addictive since they give them relief from the tough situations of life. They start
becoming
addicts and get the support of illegal means to get the substances. Proper assistance is
required to
help the people trapped in this toxic cycle of life due to their helplessness.
One might argue that homelessness is just an excuse for gaining free benefits from the
government. People fake it to take advantage of the system and become a burden on it
by
wrongfully emptying the funds. There are some fraudulent acts that have been
committed by a
lot of people but the blame for the wrongdoers cannot be put entirely on the homeless.
Those
people commit these crimes to gain extra benefits, but these people are the actual
owners of these
rights. Homelessness is an actual crisis being faced by thousands of people. Our
government and
system are strong enough to navigate the criminals and punish those, who are stealing
the rights
of the homeless.
Homelessness can be solved but it is not only the responsibility of the government but
of
the society. Every person has a duty toward this ongoing crisis. Donations should be
given; funds
should be collected to prevent the deterioration of the ongoing matter. Immediate
shelters will
Shehzad 4
provide temporary relief but employment opportunities and job training sessions
opening
employment opportunities will give relief for a longer period.
