Researchers make many decisions when designing a study. For this discussion forum, you will be stepping into the shoes of a researcher. You’ll be asked to choose a design for your study and explain the reasoning behind your choice.

To begin, you need to identify an area of interest. Choose one (1) of the following topic ideas.

Researchers are interested in studying how the use of social media affects adolescent self-esteem.
Researchers are interested in studying if virtual therapy is as effective as face-to-face therapy.
Researchers are interested in studying how video games influence aggression in children.

Then, describe the following:

Explain your topic area.
Make an observation about this topic area (i.e., an educated guess about the topic area).
State your hypothesis.
What research design would you choose and why? (You only need to choose one design).
If you choose to do a correlational study, describe a positive correlation between the two variables and a negative correlation between the two variables.
If you choose to do an experimental study, describe the independent variable and dependent variable?
Explain the strengths and limitations of each research design.

When you reply to your peers, comment on the following:

What are your thoughts about their research topic?
If you were studying their topic area, what could be a different, yet valid, observation and hypothesis about their topic area?
Would you have chosen a different research design? Why or why not?
Note for reply posts: Each reply needs to find common ground (agreement) as well as uncommon ground (disagreement) with your peer. In other words, identify 2–3 points with which you agree or disagree. Explain why you agree and/or disagree with each point. Doing so will expand your as well as your peer’s understanding of the issue. In addition, each reply needs to ask your peer one or more questions that expand their understanding of the issue.

I chose how video games influence aggression in children. My observation about the area is that while some children will and some may not it is determined in the child itself the areas that the child is raised and how it is being taught ( in my opinion)A child could be taught one way but learn something else completely it has a lot to do with their background and area of growing up.I chose the experimental study, as I would like to see how 2 children of the same age and reasonable teachings of life from their parents but being brought up in two different sections of the city affect their decision-making on their aggression

Researchers are interested in studying how the use of social media affects adolescent self-esteem.As social media develops and becomes more invasive in people’s lives, it is hard to ignore the fact that this may affect adolescent’s self-esteem. As children and adolescents develop into adults, physical interaction can play a huge role in how they communicate and understand social cues. It also allows them to develop strong interpersonal bonds that will help them build confidence and self-esteem. Adolescents can change various things about themselves through social media platforms so that other people can view them as they want to be viewed. This can be corrosive to their ability to interact socially in the real world, causing them to have problems with their image of themselves therefore degrading their confidence and self-esteem. Too much time spent on social media can have a negative impact on an adolescent’s self-esteem. I choose to use a correlation study. I feel better evidence would be provided when you can view how social media usage correlates with the mental state of adolescents.Positive correlation:An adolescent who spends less time on social media has less trouble building their self-esteem.Negative correlation: An adolescent who spends more time on social media finds it harder to make positive real-world connections with people and have dwindling self-esteem. Both of these research designs would be beneficial in providing a good observation of how social media affects adolescent self-esteem. An experimental study would be able to show proper statistical data but would be difficult to test without interjecting into the research and possibly disrupting certain variables. A correlation study would not provide as much feedback as an experimental study but would be easier to observe.
Part 2 Written Assignment – Ethical Issues in Psychological Research
Scenario
This assignment will involve the understanding and application of ethics to three landmark studies in the field of psychology. First, you will need to review the American Psychological Association’s Code of Ethics (i.e., principles and standards). Then, you will watch a video that discusses the three studies:
Solomon Asch’s group think study,
Stanley Milgram’s obedience study, and
Philip Zimbardo’s Stanford prison study.

Finally, you’ll discuss possible ethical concerns for each study while also citing the relevant principles and standards of the ethics code.
Instructions
Code of Ethics: Briefly describe the five general principles:
beneficence and nonmaleficence,
fidelity and responsibility,
integrity,
justice,
respect for people’s rights and dignity

Standards: Briefly describe two (2) of the ethical standards from the list below:
resolving ethical issues
competence
human relations
informed consent
torture
confidentiality
advertising
record-keeping and fees
education and training
research and publication
deception
assessment
therapy

Ethical concerns: Cite how the ethical principles and standards apply to EACH of the three studies. For each study, analyze the ethical nature by applying all five (5) ethical principles and two (2) ethical standards. Use the ethical principles and standards to discuss the ways in which each study is unethical or ethical.
Each study must be analyzed with at least one fully developed paragraph.
Your paper will require APA formatting (i.e., title page, in-text citations, and a reference page).Your paper will be assessed for correct spelling and grammar.
