Module 2—Social and Developmental Aspects of Gender
OVERVIEW
Module 2 focuses on the ways in which gender roles and gender identity are developed and expressed
across the life span. We will explore how gender stereotypes affect reinforcement of socially appropriate
behaviors for all genders (i.e., operant conditioning). We will examine the developmental theories that
might explain gender development, more specifically, psychoanalytic theory, social learning theory, social
cognitive theory, and gender schema theory. The module ends with an analysis of how social and
developmental theories influence our emotions, communication style, and roles adopted in relationships.

After reading the required articles and watching the required video, describe the ways in
which social stereotypes and expectations affect gender identity development. With
intersectionality in mind, consider how stereotypes about other identities (e.g.,
race/ethnicity, religion) might influence gendered identity and expression (e.g., woman of
color; transgender Muslim). Do you feel that stereotypes might affect perception of
others’ behaviors, communication style, and emotional expression? If you feel
comfortable, share whether the research findings apply to your own gender identity

Application Exercise 1
Take the online version of the Open Sex-Role Inventory (listed in the Study Materials), which measures
your gender identity based on stereotypically-gendered traits.
Write a brief reflection after taking the inventory. Respond to each of the following prompts:





Provide a description of the measure.
Describe your impression of the measure (e.g., whether it captures gender identity
appropriately).
How would you propose psychologists measure gender (e.g., traits, behaviors, biology,
expressions)?
Explain why you feel your results were accurate or not.
Comment on which social and development theories best capture the influences on your
gender identity and expression.
