Cultural Diversity – Native American Tribes: Seminole
Introduction
Exploring the rich cultural diversity of Native American tribes is a fascinating journey,
and our focus today is on the Seminole tribe, a North American indigenous community primarily
residing in Florida (Sengar, 2023). Tracing their roots from Greek towns in Georgia to the
Everglades in Florida, the Seminole have a unique history marked by resilience and adaptation.
This discussion will delve into various aspects of their culture, from traditional practices to
modern-day challenges, especially within the realm of healthcare. By understanding their
cultural nuances, we aim to appreciate the significance of tailored strategies for improving
healthcare outcomes within this distinctive community.
Seminole
Seminole is a North American native cultural tribe that majority of its members currently
reside in Florida (Sengar, 2023). The native tribe traces its roots to the Greek towns in Georgia
before they migrated to the Everglades in Florida, where they formed new settlements, turning
them into villages. The tribe spoke in the Muskogean language and was known for their welcoming
nature, especially towards escaped enslaved people. Previously, Seminole religious practices were
centered around believing in animals. However, the arrival of Christianity in the 19th century saw
many Seminole tribe members joining the religion, with many churches setting camp in the
Everglade area. So, currently, most Seminole are Christians. The tribe’s socioeconomic status was
based on fishing, hunting, and gathering (Sengar, 2023). However, in the more modern world, they
transitioned into tourism, agriculture, and other cultural activities. Some members of the Seminole
tribe are also known to be major investors in the gaming industry, as noted by Stern (2020).
The tribe’s dietary preference is heavy on carbohydrates due to the common consumption
of Indian fried bread. A meal known as Sofkee is also popular among the Seminole tribe’s
members. Sofkee consists of cornstarch, baking soda, and rice. Swamp cabbage is the most
common vegetable among its members and can be found in grocery stores in Everglades. Due to
various social determinants of health, the Seminole tribe has exposed themselves to some risky
healthcare behaviors. According to Florida’s health department, some of the risky behaviors
include lack of exercise, poor dental hygiene, and unsafe sexual activities. Tobacco, alcohol, and
drug abuse are also a major issue among the Seminole. These risky behaviors have resulted in the
tribe struggling with issues such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and
sexually transmitted illnesses.
Healthcare Behaviors: Challenges and Barriers
When it comes to healthcare, behaviors are sometimes known to employ traditional
therapies such as roots, herbal medicine, animal organs, and other natural ingredients. These
therapies are meant to cure physical and mental ailments. However, most of the Seminole
traditional medicine is kept from the outside world. The Seminole tribe has also embraced modern
medicine as most visit healthcare institutions to address various healthcare problems. Some of the
challenges to healthcare that the Seminole tribe faces include poverty due to a lack of stable
incomes, the homelessness issue due to increasing house prices and rent in Florida, and poor access
to transportation. There is also the issue of the absence of economic mobility and poor economic
and financial literacy. The majority of the Seminole tribe’s members are either uninsured or
underinsured. The challenges lead to outcomes such as poor access to nutritional foods, quality
healthcare, and educational services.
Plan to Improve Healthcare Outcomes
Seminoles are a small segment of Florida’s population but form an important part of the
community. The relevant authorities have to do more to improve the healthcare outcomes of the
cultural group. There are a few strategies that they can adopt to ensure better outcomes. First, the
authorities can improve the economic situation of the community to which the group belongs. They
can accomplish this by, for example, offering job training opportunities to community members to
ensure they are competitive in the labor market. The authorities can make available a money
market for those who want to start businesses. Improving the economic situation ensures the
group’s members can get coverage and afford access to quality healthcare. The second strategy is
to integrate the use of information and technology in the community’s public health system.
Information and technology systems will help in a number of ways.
First, it will help health officials utilize the system to educate the public on better health
behaviors, for example, the importance of regular exercise and consuming healthy dietary.
According to Al-Shorbaji (2021), IT systems enhance the storage, access, and exchange of
information. So, public health officials can utilize the systems to collect health data, track and
survey various health issues facing the cultural group and help address them before they become
an issue. Another strategy is addressing the housing problem by initiating programs such as public
housing initiatives that target the Seminole cultural group members. According to Rolfe et al.
(2020), poor housing can negatively impact an individual’s health and well-being. So, the housing
problem among the Seminoles has to be addressed. Finally, is to have the group formed an
interdisciplinary team with members from various areas that will keep track of Seminole welfare
and well-being. The team can help identify societal problems that lead to poor health and offer
solutions to address them.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Seminole tribe’s cultural identity, deeply rooted in history and
tradition, faces contemporary challenges that impact their healthcare outcomes. Addressing these
challenges requires a multifaceted approach, considering economic, technological, and social
factors. By focusing on economic empowerment, leveraging information and technology in
healthcare systems, tackling housing issues, and forming interdisciplinary teams, authorities can
work towards enhancing the overall well-being of the Seminole community. As we strive for
inclusivity and improved health equity, recognizing and respecting the cultural intricacies of
communities like the Seminole is paramount for building effective and sustainable healthcare
interventions (Al-Shorbaji, 2021; Rolfe et al., 2020; Stern, 2020; Sengar, 2023).
