Romance Covers
In the age of Kathleen Woodiwiss
(1970s), clinch covers were incredibly
popular. They were covers made by
men, supposedly for women but really
for male merchandise buyers, so they
did not entirely accurately portray
what the female reader was searching
for, but it was an efficient method for
identifying what genre a book was
from far away. They always featured a
brooding, protective male with the
heroine clasping onto him.

Clinch covers were known to
offer extreme clarity on
exactly what the book would
be about. In her book,
Dangerous Books for Girls: The
Bad Reputation of Romance
Novels Explained, Maya
Rodale says, “This cover
promises extreme passion.
It’s not shy or coy. It is not
ashamed.” This was only one
of the selling points for using
a clinch cover.

Beverly Jenkins’ Indigo clinch
cover was made for the
unabashed romance reader.
Those who were proud
enough to tote the genre, or
those who could only identify
them by the steam pouring off
the cover, would adore this
type of cover. However, since
this was the norm at the time
of publishing, Jenkins’ may
have had no other option, or
say, in the content on the
cover.

Romance Covers
Object covers became popularized
due to the desire for books that
seemed less “trashy.” Anne
Wallentine, at Electric Lit, a
nonprofit digital publisher, says,
“Canny marketers recognize that
books are status objects, part of
how readers present their tastes
and identities online as well as on
shelves.” And, nowadays, most
women are looking for something
more subtle like object covers.

In her book, Maya Rodale
brings up a fantastic quote
from Elyse Discher, a
reviewer at Smart Bitches,
Trashy Books. “If I have come
to one conclusion as an adult,
it’s that a healthy depiction of
a woman enjoying her
sexuality is the most
scandalous thing on earth
ever.” This was one of the
turning points for the
newfound object cover.

Romance Covers
Beverly Jenkins’ Indigo object
cover fought against the
stereotypical thoughts about
romance novels. By replacing
the steamy clinch covers,
object covers came to say,
“Hey! We are more than sex.
We have great plot and
character development, and we
are tired of you deciding
otherwise.” Slowly, romance is
destigmatizing women’s
desires and pleasures, which
includes reading these
romance novels.
Symbols
There are only two things
that can be seen as symbols
in the Indigo clinch cover.
1.
Roses
2.
The tall, dark tree in the
background
Ro
Roses
Pink roses are seen to
symbolize sweetness,
grace, friendship,
admiration, and perfect
happiness.
However, this can also be
foreshadowing for a
moment or setting in the
book; for example, if they
bonded over roses or met
near some.

Dark Atmosphere/Tree
According to Pen and the
Pad, a resource center for
writers, “Darkness is often
used to convey negativity:
evil, death or the unknown.”
The darkness of the
background could be
foreshadowing the climax,
or dark part, of the plot.

Darkness
As stated previously,
darkness can be related with
negativity, such as evil,
death, or the unknown.
This can be foreshadowing
for the climax, but it also
emphasizes the difference
between the darkness and
the light of the sapphires on
the cover.

Sapphires
According to The Pink
Bride, the publisher of the
Tennessee Weddings
magazine, “- sapphires are
believed to symbolize
wisdom, virtue, good
fortune, and holiness for
royals. In an engagement
ring, a sapphire means
faithfulness and sincerity,
too.”
Colors
The main color scheme of
the Indigo clinch cover
includes blue, purple, indigo,
black, white, pink, and some
green.
This color scheme gives the
book a sensual, mysterious
feel. The background
remains dark while ahead of
the couple is lovely light
pink.

Colors
The main cover of the
Indigo object cover is
limited and only includes
black, white, and blue.
Since it is so limited, the
color scheme does not
evoke any strong emotions
or feelings from me. The
colors seem less impactful
that the object on the book.

Colors
For the clinch cover, the
author uses a very light pink
for her name and the title of
the book. They take up
relatively the same amount
of space. Her name is in
smaller font to make up for
the short title of the book.
They are both in the exact
same font style and color.

Colors
For the object cover, the
author uses a singular white
font for her name. For the
title, a different font in blue
with a white shadowing is
used. They take up
relatively the same amount
of space, but her name
stands out more than the
title does.

Audience
Most clinch cover audiences
are based in the older
generations or those who are
looking for spicier content.
Clinch covers after all, are
usually quite straightforward
about what will be featured in
the book. You can sense the
sensual mood of the plot just
from the way they hold each
other on the cover.
Au
Audience
Most object cover audiences
are based in the newer
generations or those who are
looking for a more subtle
looking book to carry around
since most people find clinch
covers to be tacky nowadays.
Since there are no lovers on
the cover, the strings of
sapphires bring about a
luxurious and mysterious
mood about the book.

Predictions
My predictions based on the
Indigo clinch cover are =
Steamy, lustful love filled
with lots of mysterious and
dark moments.
Pre
Predictions
My predictions based on the
Indigo object cover are =
A love that comes from the
depths of the darkness and
into the light, with revelations
and betterments regarding
class or wealth.
