Please explain why you are interested in being a Physician Assistant.
Albert Schweitzer once said, ‘The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and
the will to help others.’ These words resonate deeply with my aspiration to become a Physician
Assistant.” In 2013, my mother was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a
relentless condition that affects motor neurons. As time passed, her need for full-time care grew,
and I naturally became her dedicated caregiver. The emotional impact of witnessing her battle
with ALS was profound. I faced many challenges – physical, emotional, and logistical – in my
role as her caregiver. These challenges tested my resilience and deepened my commitment to her
“well-being. Throughout this journey, I had countless moments of connection with my mother.
We shared conversations that transcended words and deepened our understanding of one another.
These moments strengthened our bond, and she remained my anchor and confidante throughout
her battle. Her courage in the face of adversity and her unwavering spirit left an indelible mark
on my heart. My role as her caregiver continued until her passing during my freshman year of
college. As I reflect on my journey as a caregiver for my mother, there are specific instances that
have deeply resonated with me, illuminating the profound impact of providing care and
reinforcing my commitment to this path for the rest of my life. This encounter strongly
influenced my choice to pursue a science major. I aimed to enhance my comprehension of
healthcare and its scientific underpinnings. Caring for my mother’s needs revealed the direction I
aspire to take—a path centered around healthcare and service. It’s a path that embodies the very
values I hold dear and offers me the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of
others, just as I did for my mother. As I embark on this journey toward becoming a Physician
assistant, I carry the lessons from my caregiving experience and the enduring influence of my
mother’s strength and grace.
The allure of a career as a physician Assistant stems from its unique ability to serve as a vital
link in the healthcare chain. One of the reasons the profession of a PA stands out to me is
because it creates a helpful bridge gap in primary care and provides increased access to
healthcare by working in collaboration with other physicians. During my adolescent years, much
of my care came from PAs, demonstrating the impactful collaboration they have with physicians.
Additionally most of the time my mother needed her acupuncture, it was a PA who was there to
administer it. The consistent presence of the PAs not only provided essential care but also
fostered a sense of comfort and trust for my family. Witnessing the dedication and expertise of
these professionals inspired me to delve deeper into the field of medicine. In my sophomore year
of college, as I explored the PA profession further,I discovered the ability to change specialties,
which offers a broad range of opportunities in the medical field. This flexibility is invaluable to
me because I find it challenging to envision being fully content with limiting my practice to just
one specialty, due to my innate curiosity and desire for continual learning and growth. This
sentiment is reinforced by my experiences as a float pool patient care technician and home care
aide during my time in college. These roles allowed me to work with patients across various care
settings, including psychiatric, emergency, and medical-surgical units. These diverse experiences
have equipped me with the skills to effectively engage with and provide treatment to a wide
spectrum of patient populations. I take pride in my ability to adapt to different healthcare
environments and believe that these experiences have prepared me well for a career as a PA. As
a PA, I aspire to continue honing my skills and serving diverse populations in the healthcare
field.
Throughout my undergraduate journey, dedication has been my guiding principle. As a biology
major, the workload was demanding, but I honed my time management skills early on, which proved
invaluable. I discovered that studying in groups and attending office hours significantly boosted my
academic performance. This approach not only helped me excel but also provided a healthy balance
between studies and personal interests, like modeling, outside of academics which gave me that
stress-free balance from school. My commitment to academics led to an opportunity to serve as a
teacher assistant for anatomy courses, recommended by professors impressed with my
performance and communication skills. Working alongside professors to conduct labs was
particularly rewarding; one memorable experience involved observing animal cells under
microscopes, sparking engaging discussions among students. Recognizing the challenges faced by
nursing students in these courses, I provided round-the-clock support, offering assistance and study
guidance. Collaborating with professors to develop study materials further enriched my experience,
as I found joy in helping others succeed. These experiences underscore the importance of time
management, effective study techniques, and the value of supporting peers, a foundation I intend to
bring to my future endeavors as a PA student.
Within the captivating realm of shadowing both a Pediatrician and an ICU PA, I delved into
the delicate equilibrium between skill and emotional fortitude that defines exceptional patient
care. In the pediatric setting, I discovered that the essence of pediatric care extended far beyond
the child; it encapsulated the dynamics and influence of the entire family. Witnessing this
broader impact significantly shifted my perspective, emphasizing the complexities often
overlooked in this specialty. My shadowing experience with an ICU PA was equally
enlightening. It revealed the weight of difficult decisions and the emotional toll borne by
healthcare providers. Witnessing the critical decision-making processes in such high-stakes
environments left an indelible mark on my understanding of the intricate balance between
empathy and necessary detachment. It provided insight into the multifaceted nature of healthcare,
where human emotions intersect with clinical expertise in profound ways. These narratives aim
to indirectly convey qualities such as empathy, adaptability, advocacy, and an understanding of
the emotional nuances within healthcare settings. They offer a more descriptive and detailed
depiction of your experiences without merely listing tasks or responsibilities. During my
shadowing with the ICU PA, I was able to observe how she delicately delivered bad news to
family members about decisions regarding their loved ones’ health. These were heart-wrenching
moments that illustrated the challenging decisions physicians face daily and the emotional
impact on all involved. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to participate in chest compressions
during a cardiac arrest scenario, contributing to the efforts that ultimately led to the resuscitation
of the patient. This experience was particularly emotional for me as it marked the first time I had
directly been involved in saving a patient’s life outside of simulated scenarios.
I am passionate about becoming a Physician Assistant to deliver compassionate healthcare,
driven by my mother’s battle with ALS. Through my experiences, I’ve seen a gap in healthcare
that calls for not just medical treatment, but also understanding patients’ emotions and family
needs. I’m committed to bridging this gap by providing caring and comprehensive healthcare,
addressing both physical and emotional well-being. With my varied experiences and strong
values, I’m dedicated to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives as a compassionate and
understanding Physician Assistant.”
