Personal Statement
I have a condition called Bardet-Biedi syndrome which resulted in low vision, lost in side vision
and color blindness and other disorders such as extra digits on both hands and one leg. I also
have a condition called dextrocardia where my Heart and other internal organs are in the
opposite side.
I have difficulty is crossing street or walking in place as I get lost where I am or how to
get there I cannot read boards. I am very sensitive to lights because of that walking in a sunny
day is very hard and I cannot see the door of the store properly or the numbers of the room. I can
only walk without hitting anywhere. When I am outside, I cannot see a person’s face clearly
unless if he is standing next to me. I see it as black. I have felt almost everything in a black and
white scheme. I can only see the color up to a point or it should be a very bright color. When I
am outside, I always need a sunglass with a dark tint and I always close my eyes half way
because it helps from light sensitivity a little, because of that I feels like I have a weight on my
eyes, and it is very uncomfortable.
When it come of a school setting, I have difficulty in reading books as they are in small
fonts. I cannot read what the professor writes on the board even if I sit in the front row. Using
computer is very hard and time consuming. I can only use the computer when the screen in on
black color mode with large font and I need to use a sunglass to read. Even then I can only open
my eye halfway to get a focus otherwise it is very blurry to read therefore, my eyes get tired very
fast can I need to take breaks all the time it makes my eyes full of water. If it is a white screen as
regular mode, I cannot see anything it’s a plane white screen for me. One other problem in a
school setting is finding the classrooms and entrances.
I do well in few subjects like Math, Sociology, History, Humanities. I am not well with
subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Biology
Since I moved to America, I have worked in two different places. I worked at Airport as
bag ague handler I only worked there for two months because it was harder for my parents to
drop me there at the airport every day. Then I started working in Sam’s Club for the past three
years. I only have to clear out the empty boxes out and pull the products to the front. All my coworkers and the managers helpo me. They knew about my condition, so they are very helpful. I
donot even use the scanner as it is very small. In high school back in India I participated in a
program called National Service Scheme (NSS). The program helps to develop personality
through community services and camps. I did a 240 hours of community service and attended a
ten-day camp in a two-year period in high school.
I want to attend at Northeastern Illinois University
I am majoring I social work. One of the main reasons I decided this career is because of
the two-year enrolment in NSS in high school. At the time when I was in the program, we meet
people who do community work as full time without expecting any income. I have meet people
who left their home to help others. Seeing peoples life and the struggles they face make me
thinking that I need to try helping them as I can. I always think as what happen when I am in
those situations. It was also, the same time that I found out that my disability is something that I
must take seriously because I had three accidents while crossing the streets. I stared noticing that
I have a very low side vision and I started getting cautious and it made to afraid even going out
and it led to depression since then. Even I thought about suicide, or I should die soon so that my
parents donot have to worry about me for rest of their life. Seeing those people’s life when I was
in the NSS made me think about a hope again that I can do better there are people who suffer
much worse than me. If everybody start think about ending life, there won’t be anybody left.
Facing challenges and winning them in the process is the best part about life. I think help must
fight to survive rather than giving up. So I decided to help as many people as possible with
disability to dream about there future and work hard for it and support then in their journey and
to be a part of it. I believe that it will help to grow as a better human begin in the Process.
