Workplace Environment Assessment
Nurses contribute significantly to caregiving, emphasizing the importance of a secure work
environment. A crucial aspect of a nurse’s role involves establishing and contributing to a secure
work environment. Research indicates that undesirable behaviors, such as incivility, are prevalent
in the nursing profession (Atashzadeh Shoorideh et al., 2021). In the analysis of the Clark
Healthy Workplace Inventory (Clark, 2015), my work environment assessment indicates a
workplace that falls on the borderline of being mildly healthy. While there is a shared vision and
mission based on trust, respect, and collegiality, the level of trust between formal leadership and
other members is somewhat true. Communication is transparent, direct, and respectful, and
individual achievements are somewhat celebrated. However, there is a notable decrease in
employee satisfaction, engagement, and morale. The organization seems to have some initiatives,
such as promoting teamwork and collaboration and a comprehensive mentoring program.
However, there is room for improvement in areas like shared governance, decision-making, and
policy development. The workplace is perceived as somewhat civil, with fair and respectful
treatment of employees and reasonably manageable workloads.
The organization where I work appears to have elements of workplace civility, emphasizing
respect, transparency in communication, and valuing employees as partners. However, the
somewhat true rating in various aspects suggests that there are areas where civility may be
lacking. The levels of trust, celebration of achievements, and employee satisfaction are critical
factors influencing workplace civility (Peng, 2023). The organization must strengthen these
aspects to foster a more civil and positive work environment.
Reflecting on a situation where I experienced incivility in the workplace, I recall a team meeting
where a colleague consistently interrupted others while they were speaking. This behavior
undermined the collaborative atmosphere, making it challenging for team members to express
their ideas. To address this, our team leader initiated a discussion on effective communication
during one of our team-building sessions. The leader emphasized the importance of active
listening, respecting diverse opinions, and fostering an inclusive environment. This proactive
approach helped address the incivility issue and set a more respectful tone for future interactions.
It highlighted the organization’s commitment to addressing such challenges through open
dialogue and continuous improvement.
