Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory
You can use the inventory below to help determine the health of your workplace. To complete it, carefully read the 20 statements
below. Using a scale of 1 to 5, check the response that most accurately represents your perception of your workplace. Check 5 if
the statement is completely true, 4 if it’s somewhat true, 3 if it’s neutral, 2 if it’s somewhat untrue, and 1 if it’s completely untrue.
Then total the number values of your responses to determine the overall civility score. Scores range from 20 to 100. A score of 90
to 100 indicates a very healthy workplace; 80 to 89, moderately healthy; 70 to 79, mildly healthy; 60 to 69, barely healthy; 50 to 59,
unhealthy; and less than 50, very unhealthy.

Work Environment Assessment
Creating a civil, respectful work environment is crucial for employee satisfaction and
retention, effective collaboration and communication, and quality patient care (Clark, 2015). The
Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory provides a useful framework for assessing the relative health
and civility of one’s workplace based on 20 evidence-based criteria. Based on my responses on
the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, I scored my workplace environment as 70, indicating a
mildly healthy work environment. There are some positive aspects of civility, such as generally
respectful communication and equitable treatment of employees. However, there are also
opportunities for improvement when it comes to conflict resolution skills and workload
distribution.
Work Environment Assessment
My workplace demonstrates some positive aspects of civility, like transparent and
equitable communication, and individual employee achievements are recognized (Hawn, 2020).
These factors likely contribute to the mild feelings of value that employees perceive. However,
there are opportunities for better conflict resolution processes. Disagreements often become
personalized rather than resolved respectfully and objectively. The workload also feels uneven at
times, breeding resentment. Enhancing skills in conflict management and task distribution would
promote greater civility.
Experience with Incivility
I recently experienced incivility in my workplace during staff meetings headed by the
nursing manager. On several occasions when I or other nurses asked clarifying questions about
new policies and protocols, the manager would act dismissive or impatient. Once she even said,
3
“If you had bothered to read the memo I sent, you would already know this.” Her words and tone
came across as rude and accusatory when nurses were simply doing due diligence to understand
impact on patient care. I felt anxious speaking up in subsequent meetings for fear of
embarrassment or backlash.
How It Was Addressed
The nursing manager’s uncivil behavior during staff meetings was addressed when
several nurses collaborated to provide anonymous feedback on her leadership style. Rather than
complaining to each other, a group of us sent a carefully worded email asking for the manager’s
support in creating a safe space for communication (Bonotti & Zech, 2021). The manager
thanked us for the feedback and held a unit meeting to have an open discussion about
expectations moving forward. With staff input, she instituted round table discussions where all
voices can be heard during meetings. While not perfect yet, these changes have promoted greater
civility by reducing hierarchical power dynamics between staff and leadership.
Conclusion
Creating a civil workplace environment requires ongoing effort at both an individual and
organizational level (Cometto et al., 2019). As illustrated in my examples, incivility can manifest
in interpersonal communication breakdowns and can permeate aspects of organizational
leadership and culture. Addressing systemic incivility requires commitment from formal
management but also collective, respectful action from employees empowered to advocate for
positive change. Achieving civility involves upholding workplace policies that establish
standards for respect while also building skills in areas like conflict resolution, diversity
competence, and mitigating unconscious bias against certain groups.
