I am writing to express my fervent interest in joining the HCA Healthcare Service Corps
Program (HSCP) as a commissioned officer. My name is …………., a dedicated Petty Officer
First Class (E6) in the United States military specializing in Respiratory Therapy. With seven
years of exemplary service, I am eager to transition into a higher leadership role within the HCA
HSCP program and contribute my skills and experiences to further enhance the healthcare
system.
Born and raised in Guyana, the sole English-speaking nation in South America, I bring a diverse
perspective shaped by my unique cultural background. This cultural richness has not only
enriched my personal life but has also influenced my approach to professional endeavors. My
commitment to excellence is evident in my recent academic achievements—a bachelor’s degree
in Respiratory Therapy, coupled with a minor in Health Administration Services.
In my current role, as a member of a Fleet Surgical Team in Norfolk, VA, I operate within the
critical realm of respiratory therapy. Collaborating closely with medical officers, I play a vital
role in the treatment of patients by operating controlled breathing apparatuses that administer
essential medical gases. My responsibilities extend to a spectrum of critical tasks, including
administering medical gas therapy, conducting nebulization therapy, mechanical ventilation, and
pulmonary function testing. These experiences have not only honed my technical skills but have
also instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and dedication to patient care.
My academic pursuits align seamlessly with my professional responsibilities, enhancing my
proficiency in providing exceptional healthcare. I firmly believe that my background in
Respiratory Therapy, coupled with my leadership experience as a Petty Officer First Class,
uniquely positions me to contribute effectively to the HCA HSCP program. I am particularly
drawn to the program’s commitment to excellence and its emphasis on holistic healthcare.
Beyond my professional commitments, I am a strong advocate for maintaining a balanced and
healthy lifestyle. Engaging in physical activities such as basketball and swimming, along with
regular workouts, serves as outlets for both physical exertion and friendly competition. I am
equally devoted to family values and cherish moments spent with loved ones.
My journey, shaped by a unique upbringing and an unwavering commitment to both service and
personal growth, has prepared me for the challenges and responsibilities that come with being a
commissioned officer in the HCA HSCP program.
Additional Context and Background Information
Prior to joining the United States Navy, I had the privilege of holding a commissioned position in
the Guyana Defense Force. Following 10 months of rigorous training, I was commissioned as a
Second Lieutenant on December 6, 2006. During my tenure, I assumed various leadership roles,
including serving as a Platoon Commander for Labaria Company. In this capacity, I led a platoon
of soldiers deployed to the borders of Guyana, overseeing daily operations and managing
rotations. I held command appointments at five out of six border locations in Guyana, gaining
valuable experience in strategic planning and execution.
Additionally, I had the honor of serving as the Adjutant to the First Infantry Battalion
Commander. This role required a high level of organizational and administrative skills,
contributing to the overall efficiency of military operations. After six years of dedicated service, I
made the difficult decision to resign in 2012 to prioritize spending time with my daughter, who
had been impacted by my frequent absences during military service.
Upon migrating to the United States in 2014, I felt a deep calling to continue my service.
Motivated by a sense of duty and commitment to a cause larger than myself, I enlisted in the
United States Navy. Despite the challenges of the recruitment process, I persevered, driven by
the belief that my skills and experiences could contribute meaningfully to the Navy’s mission. In
March 2016, I successfully completed boot camp in Great Lakes.
In December 2019, after years of separation, I successfully petitioned the United States
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), reuniting with my family in the United States.
This experience has further strengthened my sense of gratitude and purpose in my service to this
nation.
Throughout my time in the United States Navy, I have embraced leadership roles, leading
enlisted sailors and mentoring junior officers. Now, I am eager to elevate my leadership skills to
a higher level and take on increased responsibilities within the HCA HSCP program. I believe
that my diverse background, military leadership experience, and commitment to service align
seamlessly with the goals of the HCA HSCP program.
Thank you for considering this additional information as part of my application. I am
enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute my skills and dedication to the HCA HSCP
program and continue my journey of service and leadership.
