Part A – In this assignment you have the opportunity to create a Teaching Plan for a patient/family receiving a new medication. You will be communicating your findings in layman’s terms so that the patient/family can easily understand.

Part B – You will also be able to read and comment on your classmate’s Teaching Plans.

DIRECTIONS – PART A

Develop your Teaching Plan by selecting one prescription drug (not over the counter) that is associated with this module (chapters 25 – 30). If you have questions, please ask for clarification.

Write your Teaching Plan in terms used by the general public. Healthcare professionals use different vocabulary than their patients (for example, in your Teaching Plan instead of writing, “anticoagulant”, you will write “it is a blood thinner “).
Each report should follow the Teaching Plan Template (see below).
The report should be typed. Each page of the report should include the student’s name and the date.

The report should be typed in a word processor, preferably MS Word, 12-point Arial font, with a maximum of one inch margins on top, bottom, right & left. If you do not have MS Word, save your report as a Rich Text File (rtf ) by using the “Save As” feature and the “Save As Type” drop-down box near where the file name is located (usually at the bottom of the screen).

Name the file with your last name and then first name (example: DooleySam).
TEACHING PLAN TEMPLATE
Provide the following to the patient/family:
Generic or Brand name and how it is to be taken (route)
Why are they taking the medication (what is it treating) – you can make up your own case scenario
What special dietary instructions should they follow?
What should they do if they forget a dose?
What side effects can this medication cause?
What special precautions or specific information should I know?
What should they know about storage and disposal of this medication?
What to do in case of emergency/overdose
NOTE: You will not be able to see your classmates’ posts until you have posted your response. You may subscribe to the forum so that you will receive notification when there are new postings to read.
