Description
Topic 1. Write a short scenario that illustrates a particular type of dysfunctional conflict. Provide the who and what of the conflict. Discuss the components of the scenario that characterize the particular type of dysfunctional conflict. From your readings, identify and explain two strategies to effectively deal with the conflict.
Topic 2. Cultural competency means to be respectful and responsive to the health beliefs and practices—and cultural and linguistic needs—of diverse population groups. Discuss strategies to provide care to patients who are from different cultures and may have different cultural beliefs. For example, what might the APN do if the patient refuses a high-quality, evidence-based treatment meant to cure the illness because of cultural beliefs? How can the APN respect cultural beliefs while still providing quality care? In what ways can the nurse do more than simply “do no harm?”
Topic 3. Holistic care refers to approaches and interventions that address the needs of the whole person: body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Consider the following case study:
You are caring for a first-time mother in a health clinic. While assessing the woman, you notice she is becoming visibly upset. When you ask, she notes that her mother, with whom she was very close, died last year and that she really would have loved to have shared this pregnancy with her. You empathize with the patient, as your own mother just died 6 months ago. She also notes that she and her partner have been bickering a lot lately on top of her feeling generally sore, tired, and overwhelmed.
Define holistic care in your own words. Describe four ways you can implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing. In addition, you may consider the intersection of holistic care and caritas principles from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science.
Topic 4. Select a care environment where advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) may practice. Some examples to choose from may include:
Rural health clinic
Emergency department
Urgency care
Community health center
Family practice
Pediatric Clinic
Using the conditions listed in Box 11.1 in the Joel textbook, identify and discuss two different conditions that may have a significant impact on revenue in the care setting. Describe how these conditions might affect how APNs provide care in these settings.
Topic 5. Many APNs become independent contractors for health care groups that provide services to patients. Discuss the elements that are important to you when seeking a place of employment. What is negotiable and what is non-negotiable? Discuss the two benefits of formal employment as an APN.
Topic 6. Research a health-care initiative or legislative statue that is currently underway in your state or federally. You may want to check with nursing organizations that have legislative departments that can provide their analysis on current health-care issues. You may also conduct online research to identify current issues. Discuss how you can take an active role as a health-care advocate (at the local, state, or federal level as appropriate). Identify one tactic to advocate for your identified initiative or legislation.
