Course Project Overview
Core Assessment: Core Project
The course project consists of a series of interconnected weekly assignments that culminates in a
final project submission (Unit 7) and a presentation (Unit 8). Students will use the business case
scenario below to complete the project and follow the deliverable schedule included at the end of this
document. This project assignment will introduce you to many of the project management concepts,
terminology, and artifacts (documents) routinely used in managing information systems.
Assignment
Create the project documents, with all associated artifacts (supporting documents), for UPDATING
an existing system for an organization.
Background
In supporting Information Systems, Managers are constantly involved in the management of creating,
modifying, and updating systems. It is critical that Information Systems Managers understand the
process of managing the activities associated with the activities associated with these efforts and this
is where the majority of an Information Systems Manager spend their time. Software support falls
into three categories, creating, modifying, and updating systems.
Creating
This category includes activities such as installing a new system purchased from an outside source
or building a new system for your organization. For this category, you are starting with something
you never had and therefore significant interaction with your business users of the systems is
required. Examples of this include the purchase of a new system or the creation of a new system
such as accounting, inventory management, human resource management system. This category
has the most business user interaction and the most unknowns for the organization. The risk of
failure is very high for this category as they are often very large projects with many different groups.
Modifying
Activities such as modifying the code for an existing system, either purchased or custom-built
software fall into this category. Activities such as adding fields to existing databases, modifying
purchased code to match your organization’s particular needs. Examples of this category include
adding an interface to existing systems, adding, or removing tables from a database, modifying
computer screens to meet the business user’s needs, and break/fix work on software systems

(bugs), to name a few. Since there are fewer unknowns for modifications, business user involvement
and risks are less than the Creating category.
Updating
Once a system is up and running, this is the category you would be dealing with most often. If the
system is complex and has many different technologies involved, updates may happen as frequently
as weekly for different components of the system. Examples of efforts in this category include
Operating Systems, driver, security, network, database, purchased application and custom
applications to name a few. Since there are very few unknowns in this category, business user
involvement and risks are significantly less than in the other categories.
All lectures and assignments for this course will be applied to this Course Project Assignment.
Unless you have many years of experience in software development and support, you will NOT be
able to successfully complete this assignment unless you attend class and participate in the delivery
of the weekly course materials. This assignment will involve the extensive use of templates from
various Project Management Internet sites.
