Signature Assignment – Part 1
Social and Cultural Transformations in the 19th century
You will write a 750-1000-word paper (3-4 pages typed, double-spaced) that identifies and
explains one significant social and/or cultural transformation that took place in your Signature
Assignment country during the 19th century. Your paper is due to D2L by Monday, February
12th, at 11:59pm (NOTE: this is an extended deadline).
To complete this paper, you will do the following:
1. Sign up for a country in the Country Sign-Up Sheet (under Assignments). This is going
to be your country for the rest of the semester, so choose your country carefully!
2. Review your slides, notes, and the relevant sections in your Anderson book that discuss
the developments in your society during the 19th century. Be sure to review relevant
global as well as regional and local developments. (NOTE: Your country wasn’t a
“country” in the 19th century, so developments weren’t self-contained.)
3. Choose one change or event from the 19th century that you will focus on for your
paper. It could be a social or economic change, like the rise of silk manufacturing in
Lebanon, or a specific event like the ‘Urabi revolt.
4. Conduct additional research using our library’s resources. In addition to your textbook,
be sure to include at least one additional scholarly source (book, e-book, article) that you
found using the UA Library website.
5. Introduce your paper with a brief overview of what was going on in your
country/society in the early 19th century. Who was ruling? How was society structured?
What was the economy like? Who had power and influence? Who did not?
6. Write a background explaining some of the relevant broader developments in the
19th century that affected your society. (NOTE: A lot happened, so you’ll need to decide
what developments will best help the reader understand the change/event.
7. Describe the change/event. What happened? Who was involved? When did this
happen? Where did it happen?
8. Explain why and how your change/event happened. Be sure to include both the factors
that are specific to your society and the broader developments you introduced in #5
above.
9. Go to Packback Deep Dive for support with writing and citations. Be sure every body
paragraph has at least one citation (with page number, if available).
10. Upload to D2L by the deadline!
For students in the Honors section of 277B:
You will complete the same assignment as above with a few tweaks:
1. Your paper will be a bit longer: 1000-1300 words.
2. You will consult at least three scholarly sources by three different authors, in addition to
the Anderson textbook.
3. As you complete #8 above, you will discuss some points of agreement and/or
disagreement among the authors of your three scholarly sources. Do all three authors
agree about the factors that led to the change/event? Do some authors give greater
weight to one factor over others?
4. In your conclusion, you will include your own evaluation of which authors’ arguments you
find most persuasive and why.
Good luck!
