Research Presenta on Instruc ons
You will prepare a 10-minute video presenta on on a research topic of interest. You may work alone or
with one other student. You will begin by choosing a topic that is relevant to you. Next, you will iden fy
ve research ar cles related to your topic. You will choose the most relevant three, summarizing key
elements of these and transla ng their contents into plain language pa ents or other laypeople would
be able to understand. (This also helps me see how well you understand each ar cle’s contents.) In
addi on, you will provide an evalua on of their worth. (Is each study meaningful, well done, ethical?
Will it change clinical prac ce or is it a “so what?” study?)

Iden fying a Topic (no points)
Due 3/2/24
Students will post their chosen topic in a Full Class Discussion Forum set up for that purpose. The
instructor will provide feedback, le ng students know if a topic is too broad, too narrow, or otherwise
needs to be modi ed. Topics may be from the student’s chosen eld or any health-related eld, such as
mental health, sociology of medicine, etc.
Iden fy 5 Ar cles on Your Topic; Summarize/Translate 3
(150 points)
Due 4/13/24
1. Conduct research via Towson’s Cook Library and iden fy 5 ar cles on your topic of interest.
a. All of these must be actual studies inves ga ng a ques on, not review ar cles or metaanalyses summarizing the state of knowledge in the eld.
b. You may want to begin by nding a recent review ar cle and “mining” its reference
sec on to iden fy relevant ar cles on the topic, and then also iden fying relevant
literature that has been published since.
c. Remember that reading study abstracts is a quick way to tell if an ar cle is actually
relevant to your topic, that is, if it’s even “in the ballpark.” You should expect to look

2. Using the Ar cle Summary Worksheet provided, provide the APA reference for each of your 5
ar cles. Highlight the 3 you will go on to summarize/translate. Explain why you chose them.
Review ar cles and meta-analyses may not be used. For your 3 ar cles, you need to choose
actual studies focused on original research, not reviews.
3. Also using the worksheet, analyze each of your three ar cles, detailing and explaining its
contents. You may need to look up some concepts as we will likely not have covered everything
you encounter at the me you are doing this assignment.
Any acronyms should be spelled out completely the rst me they are used. Your reader (and
eventual viewers/listeners) may not know what these are. For example: chronic obstruc ve
pulmonary disease (COPD).
Research Presenta on (150 points)
Due 5/4/24
1. You will make a video presenta on to share with the class. The preferred method for
presenta ons is Screencast-O-Ma c, a web-based applica on that is free for videos shorter than
15 minutes. Instruc ons for Screencast-O-Ma c are posted in a separate document under the
Research Presenta on Module.
2. Use the feedback you received on your summary/transla on to ll your video with meaningful,
well-communicated content. Your viewers should be able to iden fy the ar cles you’re
discussing – provide at least the rst author’s name and the tle. Include informa on on each
study’s objec ves, methods, results, and limita ons. Wrap up the topic at the end, providing an
overall conclusion. Language used should re ect whether your inten on is to communicate to
laypeople or colleagues. Either way, the video should be “ ght,” explaining a topic and the
research surrounding it in succinct and understandable terms. It should not “ramble.”
Remember that there is a 10-minute me frame, and this is re ected in the grading rubric.
3. IF you use images in your presenta on, make sure they are not copyright protected or otherwise
not free to use. Beware snagging photos and other images o the internet from wherever – the
pre er the picture, the more likely it is protected. An easy way to grab images that are free to
use is as follows:
• Open Google and click on Images, or you can just go to google.com/images
• Search for whatever you’re looking for (e.g. children playing; scien sts doing research)
• Select Tools
• Select Usage Rights
• Select “Labeled for Non-Commercial Reuse”
4. Make some prac ce runs in order to make sure that ligh ng, sound, the speed of your delivery,
and other aspects of the video are working. You don’t want to be lost in shadow or inaudible!
5. If you appear in the video, dress professionally; a video of you in your sweats or pajamas will not
be as e ec ve as a video of you in your scrubs or a suit, for example.
6. Provide the link to your Screencast-O-Ma c video le to the instructor by uploading it to the
designated place on Blackboard.
