Mathematical Practice Professional Development

Description

The K-12 Standards for Mathematical Practice describe various skills that educators should seek to develop in students. These standards describe student behaviors, help to ensure an understanding of math, and focus on developing reasoning and building mathematical communication. Incorporating the eight Standards for Mathematical Practices (or as many as you can) into lessons not only helps students develop certain skills, but it also helps to ensure learning is happening on a deeper level and in a meaningful way.

Your principal tasked you to create a professional development on the eight mathematical practices for the teachers at your K-8 school. Choose a grade band (K-3, 4-6, or 7-8) to gear your presentation towards. Focusing on the mathematics domain “Operations and Algebraic Thinking,” create a 12-15 slide digital presentation for your teacher peers that includes the following:

One slide for each practice that can be printed and displayed as a classroom poster. Each of these slides should include at minimum the title of the practice, a visual/illustration of the practice, and a caption for the visual/illustration. Please make sure all visuals are refereced as well as “image references” slide
Three technology tools that can be used to engage students in the mathematical practices with an explanation of how each one can be used during instruction, practice, and/or assessment
Five strategies for teachers when implementing the mathematical practices during instruction
Two examples of how the mathematical practices could develop students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills across content areas

Include a title slide and reference slide. Presenter notes are required.
