Get into the habit of analysis — analysis

What is an essay?
An academic essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an idea or
argument using evidence, analysis, and interpretation. It is composed of
at least 4 body paragraphs (an introduction, two body paragraphs and a
conclusion). The number of paragraphs is decided by the number of key
points listed in your thesis statement.
How to analyze a Poem?
Use the following table as your
guide whenever you have an essay
assignment.

Before you start writing
Planning
Writing
Revision
Read the text (in our case here: poem)
carefully, number of times!
Decide the focus of your essay and write
down a very specific thesis statement.
This thesis statement must directly
inform the reader on what they will find
in your piece. It must lists the keywords
of what you will discuss in your body
paragraphs. Follow the same listing order
when you arrange your body paragraphs.
Make sure you begin your essay with an
interesting hook that captures the
readers attention! Follow this hook with
broad/general information and conclude
your introduction with your thesis
statement.
Revise the spelling
Search for all necessary information (like
the author’s name, title of the work,
summary, tone, mood…etc) and write
them down on an empty piece of paper
Write down your topic sentences, i.e.
statements with which you’ll begin each
paragraph. (Again, your topic sentences
need to be clear and straightforward)
Make sure you don’t sway out of topic
when you write, and always ask yourself:
Is this relevant to what I am discussing?.
Maintain high levels of coherence and
cohesion.
Revise the structure
Underline all the figures of speech and
sound devices you notice!
With one topic sentence in mind, re-read
the poem searching for quotations that
supports your argument. Once you
gather all the information you need for
one body, repeat the same technique for
the second and third topics.
Remember to “paraphrase” and/or use
“direct quotes” from the poem itself to
support your argument.
Remember to always CITE your
references.
Revise your diction
Try to analyze the meaning/significance of
figures of speech found. (Write down all
possible meanings) Re-read the poem in
light of these different meanings of the
different figures and sound devices found,
and decide which meanings add to the
overall meaning of the poem.
Gather as much supporting quotes as
you can to have tons of different choices
to choose from when you write.
End this masterpiece with an
extraordinary statement that leaves the
reader no room but to think about what
you’ve written.
Submit your paper ☺
