For this discussion forum activity, you must
pick a specific society being studied this week, as found in Chapters 2 and 3 of your textbook or in the LIB101: Week 2 Civilization Tour interactive,
assume the role of advisor to a powerful leader in your society,
identify two ideals on which society rests and whether these ideals are upheld in practice, and
report on at least two topics from the topic options below.
Topic options for your state of the realm report (pick at least two):
Identify two aesthetic and intellectual achievements of your society in the realm of art, architecture, philosophy, theology, literature, sciences, or music.
Who creates aesthetic or intellectual works?
Who funds the creation of such works?
For what purposes are such works created?
What ideals are expressed in such works?
Identify two technological achievements of your society.
How has your society addressed water supplies?
How has your society contended with urban development?
How has your society advanced mechanisms for trade or commerce?
Describe the government or system of rule in your society (your understanding of governance, from the point-of-view of your character).
Who leads? Upon what basis?
Who participates in governance? Upon what basis?
What ideals are associated with “good governance” or a “good ruler”?
What type of legal system or laws uphold rule? How is justice conceived?
Describe the ethics, values, or religious beliefs present in your society (your understanding of the ethical or belief systems of your society).
Is there religious unity or strife between different factions or faiths?
How are ethics, values, or religious beliefs expressed by individuals, families, or entire communities?
Are there rites or rituals associated with life stages such as birth or death?
How do the values you describe impact art, architecture, philosophy, theology, literature, sciences, music, systems of rule, or gender ideals?
Evaluate gender relationships (meaning your understanding of the roles played by men and women—whether they were their actual or just perceived roles).
What ideals shape family relationships? Between parents? Parents and children? Siblings? Ancestors? Larger kinship networks?
What ideals shape what is considered appropriate or inappropriate sexuality?
What ideals shape work?
How are gender roles and relationships expressed in other areas of society?
Remember that you are presenting your findings to a powerful person. You must identify social ideals yet be bold enough to note when these ideals fall short or produce unintended negative consequences! Be persuasive by supplying specific examples drawn from course materials or sources produced by your own research to support your positions. Cite and format all sources according to APA Style as outlined in the Writing Center’s Introduction to APALinks to an external site., using both in-text citations and providing full references at the bottom of your post.
Tip! Before you submit your discussion forum post in the classroom, it’s recommended that you create a draft in a Word document first. Review Strategies to Help Bring Your Report to LifeLinks to an external site. for support.
Your initial post is due by Day 3 and must be at least 250 words in length.
