During this assignment, you will locate a current criminal case from a news source that is currently being investigated by a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency. During the first part of the assignment (the theory portion), you are to explain the case in your first paragraph being sure to cite the news source you took the case from at the end of paragraph 1. Proceed by giving details of how the investigating law enforcement agency should proceed with interviews for the crime you’ve selected. Specifically, explain how the investigating PD should go about conducting interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects. Besides discussing who should be interviewed, be sure to articulate where, when, why, and what some of the questions you feel will be necessary during each interview. Hint: using headings to help explain each interview category (I.e. victim, witness, suspect) the investigating PD will engage in makes it easier to stay organized in your explanation of how the case should be investigated. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CHOOSE A CURRENT CRIMINAL CASE THAT HAS A VICTIM! You should not choose a homicide case for this assignment because the investigating agency cannot interview a dead person. This theory portion of your assignment should be approximately two-three (2-3) full pages and must also have a cover page and Reference page. The second part of the assignment is the practical part (the authentic portion) where you become the actual investigator working for the investigating agency conducting the criminal investigation. During this authentic portion of your assignment, you will complete the following reports that will be included for submission (along with the theory portion): 1. A Victim Statement for each victim interviewed (Hint: you are wise to locate a case with only 1 victim). 2. A Witness Statement for each witness interviewed (MUST interview at least 2 witnesses) – they can be anyone you want as long as these made up witnesses would realistically be interviewed in the news case you selected. 3. Suspect/defendant statements – you’ll need a statement for each defendant you arrested (Hint: you are wise to locate a case with only 1 suspect). List all sources of research at the end of your paper on your Reference Page using APA guidelines for listing authors, dates, titles, and publishing information. General Expectations: This theory portion of the assignment is to be a minimum of 2-3 pages in length, not including your Cover Page, Reference Page, Reports, and Statements. You should use a 12 point “Times” font, printed on 8 ½ X 11’’ paper, double-spaced, with a one inch margins all the way around. The assignment is to abide by all APA rules regarding proper citation, documentation, and formatting. The assignment will constitute fifteen percent (15 %) of your course grade.
