Exploring Reaction Rates
PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. Describe at least two factors that can affect the rate of a chemical reaction. The rate of a
chemical reaction can be change by temperature, catalyst presence.
2. Imagine you are a guest speaker for a kindergarten class, and you have been asked to
explain the chemical reaction occurring inside of a glow stick. What would you say? The
gorgeous glowing light inside a glow stick is produced by a chemical reaction. A tiny glass
tube and a liquid solution make up the glow stick’s two main parts. A dye and a material
known as a fluorescent dye are among the various chemicals that make up the liquid
solution.
3. Using the “If ______________, then _____________” format, write a hypothesis to predict
what will occur to a glow stick if you change its temperature. Glowsticks get brighter when
their temperature is raised.

Post-Lab Questions
1. Was your hypothesis supported or rejected? Use the data in Table 1 and/or your graph to
support your reasoning.
2. The decomposition of H2O2 is a first-order reaction given by the formula: Rate = k [H2O2]1.
How would the reaction rate be affected if the H2O2 concentration were double its original
value?
3. What was the independent variable in the experiment?
4. What was the dependent variable in the experiment?
5. What are some human errors that could have affected your results?
6. What is the correlation between the brightness of the glow stick and the reaction rate?
