Organizational Analysis Paper
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze an organization, the leadership of the organization, and future aspirations. Do NOT identify by name the organization or leader.
You may “create” the name of the organization (example: St. Elsewhere, or Cario Health Department, etc). This may be an organization where you have been employed in the past or are employed or involved currently. You are going to critically analyze the healthcare organization – look at their mission/vision, and are they meeting that mission and vision. Look at their healthcare delivery system – what type of health care delivery system do they use? Look at their culture – for example, if their mission/vision says they promote service to the community, how are the employees providing service to the community and do they embrace that idea or resist that idea.
Examine a specific nurse leader in the organization (do not identify them by name, but you may create a name such as Nancy Nurse, or Suzie Supervisor). Identify their role (are they a nurse unit manager, a house supervisor, a program director or a Chief Nursing Officer?) What type of leadership skills and styles do they exhibit? Give examples of how they demonstrate those leadership styles. What challenges do they face in their role? What successes do they exhibit (you can have informal discussions with them to identify these). Support your observations with information you have read in the text or readings.
What is the strategic plan of the organization? Where do they want to be in 5 or 10 years? Are they seeking to expand services? How do staff members and nurse leaders believe that will impact their work?
Has the organization addressed the social determinants of health in their community? Give examples. Does the nurse leader and/or staff embrace or resist those ideas?
The analysis paper should include:
Brief description of history of organization
Mission/vision of organization (do not copy website – rephrase in your own words)
Organizational culture
Management/leadership structure & governance
The role of the nurse leader, challenges and successes
Future directions/aspirations of the organization and/or leader. Consider the social determinants of health and impact on future directions.
The paper should be no more than 4-5 pages, double-spaced, using appropriate APA format (7th ed). There will be NO spelling or grammatical or punctuation errors. Please proofread your submissions carefully (or have a friend proofread your paper prior to submission. Follow the criteria in the rubric for paper headings. A minimum of 3-5 references from peer-reviewed professional healthcare or nursing journals should be included.
