JOURNAL QUESTIONS
FIRST HALF OF THE SEMESTER
JOURNAL ENTRY: “ANTHROPOLOGICAL QUESTIONS”
• If you were a practicing Anthropologist, what questions would you ask about a
groups’ beliefs, values or practices?
JOURNAL ENTRY: “MY CULTURAL PRACTICES”
• Write down 3 aspects of your own culture that you think someone from another culture
might find weird, wrong or confusing. Title this entry: “My Cultural Practices.”
• Here are some examples from other cultures you might find odd.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/14/weird-cultural-differences_n_3875360.html
JOURNAL ENTRY: “GLOBALIZATIONS: PROS AND
CONS”
• Write down 3 good things that have resulted from global cultural contact and
3 bad things.
JOURNAL ENTRY: “IMAGES”
• Do an image search for “cultural anthropology” online.
• Choose three images that support the stereotype that Anthropologists are
white academics who study foreign, non-white and supposedly “primitive”
cultures.
• Paste the images into your journal if possible. Otherwise, just describe the
images in words.
JOURNAL ENTRY: “COLLECTING DATA”
• Now that you’ve read chapter 3, in your journal write down three ways you
might collect data to answer this anthropological question:
How do the future goals of American high school
seniors compare with those of students in China?
JOURNAL ENTRY: “OBJECTIVITY AND BIAS”
• Answer the following question in your journal. Be honest.
Which of these practices do you feel are wrong or unethical? Why? And
why these and not others? Write a list in your journal.
cannibalism
keeping slaves
torture
sex with children
murder
rape
homosexuality
compulsory military service
dowry for brides
exposure of dead
bodies (leaving them to
rot somewhere or be
eaten by animals)
public nudity
(paying money to the
groom’s family)
execution for
crimes
JOURNAL ENTRY: “NACIREMA”
• After you read the article on the Nacirema, think about the following
questions.
1. Do you feel Nacireman practices are wrong or
unethical?
2. What questions would you ask as an
anthropologist studying the Nacireman people and
culture?
3. Does your cultural background affect how you
interpret or feel about the Nacireman cultural
practices?
4. Knowing that this is an etic description of
American culture, have any of your opinions of the
Nacirema changed?
JOURNAL ENTRY: “BIAS”
• Go look at comments that were made about the Nacirema in the “Student Responses
to the Nacirema” document (it’s a word file in Module 2). The responses of many
people often contain pejorative terms like sadistic, barbaric, primitive, or even weird.
• If you think negatively about a culture, it is more likely that you will behave
negatively toward individuals of that culture. This is called implicit bias.
• Write down some of the words you notice that would indicate ethnocentrism. How
would you feel if someone referred to you by those terms? Record your answer.
JOURNAL ENTRY: “IDENTITY”
• 1. What is your gender?
• 2. What is your race?
• 3. What is your ethnicity?
• 4. How important are these to how you identify yourself?
• 5. What are some other characteristics that you would include as part of your
identity (like your job or your social relationships)? For example, “student”
could be part of your identity, or “brother/sister.”
JOURNAL QUESTION: “RACE QUESTIONS”
• Take some notes in your journal about how you are feeling about these ideas
about race. Are they new to you or not? Are there some questions you plan to
research?
JOURNAL ENTRY: “FAMILY INTRO”
• How would you define family?
• Which two or three family members do you feel closest to?
• Is your last name the same as your father’s? Your mother’s?
Neither? Both?
JOURNAL ENTRY: “FAMILY IN THE USA”
• Do you think the USA is a patriarchal society today? Why or
why not?
• Do you think the descent and residence rules reflect on who
holds power in the society or the family? Explain.
• If you belong to, or have experience of, another culture, please
comment on your understanding of that culture also (Is it
patriarchal? Do kinship rules reflect power relations?).

Journal: 2 Half
Journal Entry: “Social Sanctions”
Write about a time when the possibility of social sanctions (gossip,
peer pressure) affected a choice you made. This can be something
minor. What social rule was in question?
◦ For example: You would have gone to the wedding without a date, but you
knew your family would have a fit, so you asked a random friend to go with
you. The social rule was that people always attend wedding in pairs or small
groups—you don’t attend alone.
Journal Entry: “Socialization”
How do you think punishment and social sanctions (or the threat of
them) contribute to socialization (how we learn our culture’s values,
norms and approved behaviors)? Give an example.
What are some other factors?
Journal Entry: My Religious Background
Do you practice a particular religion, or parts of some
religions? (For example, many Hmong are Christian and also practice traditional Hmong
religious elements.) If yes, what and why? If not, why not? Have
you ever switched religions? (For example, did you grow up with a particular
religion, but now practice differently?)
Journal Entry: My Religion
Religions can include many different elements. Pick two from the list
below and describe how they intersect with your religion or your life.
◦ Dieties/Gods; Magic; Miracles; Rituals; Morals/Ethics; Sacrifice;
Religious officials
Journal Entry: “The Use of Religion”
“Throughout history, political leaders have used religion to promote and justify
their views and policies.”
◦ Kottak, Cultural Anthropology, 2014
I underlined the phrase “used religion” for a reason.
• Do you think politicians (in the US or elsewhere) always
hold the religious views they state?
• Do you think politicians use people’s religious views to
sway them politically?
Journal Entry: “Anthropocene”
Search the internet to find out a little more about
theAnthropocene.
1. When do you think the Anthropocene began? (If you feel that it
hasn’t begun yet, feel free to state that as well.)
2. What markers would you use as “significant” and why? (i.e., what
is it that defines the Anthropocene to you)
Journal Entry: “Climate change”
1. Have you noticed any particular changes over your lifetime that made you wonder, “Is this
connected to climate change?” Give examples if you have any.
2. There are other reasons I didn’t touch on why climate change is so hard to address. What do
you think some of these reasons are?
3. What do you think are the most pressing concerns for the future of a changing climate?
Journal Entry: Pros and Cons
Earlier in the semester, I asked you to write down in your journal
3 goods things and 3 bad things that have resulted from global
cultural contact. Go back and look at your answers.
◦ 1. Have any of your opinions changed during the semester?
Explain your answer.
◦ 2. Do you think others would agree with your pros and cons?
Why or why not?
Journal Entry: Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous people persist despite the attempts of many
governments to remove them. Have a look at the following link.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_indigenous_peoples
◦ (I chose this wikipedia list because it actually was the most detailed. It also has easy links for you to
follow.)
Choose 2 of these groups to read about. Write down each group’s
name, location, something you find interesting about them, and a
question you have.
Journal Entry: Art and Society
Describe a way in which you’ve seen a political or social group use
the arts to promote unity or disunity. You can think about current
events, things you’ve seen on TV, advertisements, etc.
Journal Entry: Art, Culture, and the
Individual
Choose a piece of art (performance, song, film, etc.) that speaks to
you. Explain how it reflects some of the aspects of the culture in
which it was made AND why it speaks to you as an individual.
